Definition of Racism in Today’s Society …show more content…
Racism is a word that can be defined in many different ways to people in today’s society.
United State of America, which brought people from all over the world, where people find freedom and opportunity, at the same time is it a country that has a racial discrimination. “Racism is the belief that characteristics and abilities can be attributed to people simply on the basis of their race and that some racial groups are superior to others” (Shah, 2013). Racism has affected the society and organizations, it is also being considered as a term for stereotype people. There are many types of racism in this society such as racial discrimination, institutional racism, economical racism, and historical racism. It is the unsatisfactory treatment of the human beings on the basis of their skin color which makes one big illustrious from a certain race or
community.
Racism can kill people and at the same time it could save them too. “Racism and discrimination have been used as powerful weapons encouraging fear or hatred of others in times of conflict and war, and even during economic downturns”(Shah, 2013). For example, it could kill them because of discrimination or it could hurt them in many ways. People could be in danger from others racist behavior or they could disadvantaged and become a victim of the society. But in some ways racism can save people’s life, because of the discrimination they become more strong and recognized about themselves. They become more powerful from barrier of racism, they build themselves to overcome the discrimination and they become part of the society other them becoming a victim of the society. Racism affects many people everyday, when someone is racist they become judgmental and unfair, they also have limited amount of friends. Racists are spoiling the society and making the next generation follow them to be a racist. Although the fights to racism has made huge steps long ago but racism it still their alive and well today’s society. “This is probably due to the fact that schemes for domination and discrimination (internal exclusion) are powerful tools for the identification of oneself and others, and thus of historical and collective memory” (Etinne, 2013).
There have been many stories and news about racism, which is one human characteristic that seems to get bigger and bigger as the world becomes smaller and smaller. Racism is an act of intentionally discriminating people based on social status, color of skin, traditions, social behavior and even attitude. Racism is one of the world’s major issues today, many people are not aware of how much racism still exists in our society. Some people believe that racist conduct stops from racist attitudes and beliefs that can only be changed on the specific level and in specific minds and hearts. “Americans, it seems, could well benefit from a period of less talk about race--about racial feelings, racial differences, racial slights, racial traits, racial stereotypes, and all the rest” (Arch, 2013). Racial discrimination and racist power can be prevented by the people who are victimized, as they speak up against demeaning language, jokes and use of stereotypes. The basic cause, conventional, institutions, government, anti racism groups and even some hidden events of any possible encouragements is the solution to racism. “Ethnic minorities and different cultures in one country can often be used as a scapegoat for the majority during times of economic crisis” (Shah, 2013). An individual do not born as a racist, but only learn to become one as they grow up because they see it in the adults practicing racism which results others learn from them. “ONE WAY that structural racism works is that the legacy of racism opens up possibilities to profit directly off inequality, thereby reinforcing both the unequal conditions and racist ideas about them” (Jones, 2012).
Racism is big a problem in this society today, just like it was decades ago. If ethnic minorities have the legal right to be treated just like everyone else, there will be fewer problems in the society. Fight against racism should be an immediate action for this society; it should be taken as challenge. “The most pressing and urgent task before us, if we are ever to climb out of the morass we have fashioned for ourselves, is to tear down our absurd, counterproductive, and incendiary system of group classifications and preferences, and to reassert the doctrine of race neutrality” (Arch, 2013).
