Why Is Recess Essential
Is Recess a Essential or Not Essential While looking constantly at the clock, minute by minute, and then eventually the bell rings, the class is over and nobody remembers what the class was about. This is why we need recess; recess is a necessity for middle school children to be at a stable emotional and physical state. For many children in middle school stress is a major problem. After all of the studying and homework at home children need a break to have fun during the school hours with their friends. This change affects the students, faculty, and administration. Sadly, some people such as administrators and teachers might be against this change. They might believe it takes up too much time for academics. Without recess children cannot focus, …show more content…
The administrators can organize a set time for recess, one idea is that they can make it so there is a lunch/recess period, so children have the option to socialize and enjoy their free time. This change should be applied because without recess, the physical and emotional positive states of children will descend leading to depression and child obesity according to www.oureverydaylife.com/benefits-recess-middle-schools-6194.html. It is true that children have P.E., but the children who take Fine Arts do not have the chance to have fun and exercise. From www.debate.org/opinions/should-middle-schools-have-recess, physical activity increases blood flow to the brain, allowing students to do better in their schoolwork. Throughout the middle school years, children are growing at different rates of development physically, mentally, and emotionally as said by www.educationworld.com/a_issues/issues/issues180.shtml. This is impacting the children in different ways. If this does not provide enough proof that children should have recess, then listen to these quotes. From Mrs. White the eighth grade English teacher at Pine Crest School, “It is a good idea for students to receive recess during the school day.” Also, …show more content…
Finn Roventini from the eighth grade states, “If we had recess during school, even occasionally, it’d help us release stress and energy that usually develops during an average school day.” Some people think recess is not necessary for a middle school child. Those people might possibly say that physical education provides enough exercise and there is too much learning to do. But some students do not have an ample amount of time to exercise. After a long day of school work, and then suddenly Pine Crest has recess, now children

The essay Power of the Playground is a New York Times article that explains the effectiveness of recess and physical activity in the lives of children during their hours at school. The main issue addressed in the essay is that recess is not always a fun experience due to bullying and exclusions to all types of children. The author, David Bornstein, introduces the audience to a new program called “Playworks”. This New York Times essay describes how this program works to help improve recess for all children. Recess plays an important role in the lives of children, and Bornstein uses figures and real life examples to show the audience that the Playworks program aims to provide a positive recess experience for all children.…

Recess to me means taking a “break” from doing something or taking your mind “off “of something. Many Americans feel as if it shouldn’t be implemented in the school schedule because they are not thinking of the importance of the physical activity that the child is getting during this period of time. Nearly 18% of children age 6-11 are obese in America could, it is because they lack physical activity. Physical activity is important for all people to stay healthy and active. Physical activity has a huge affect during the early childhood phases, because the children are developing still and they need to work the junk food off that they ate at lunch during recess. One way for children to achieve physical activity is through school recess.…

“According to the Pediatrics journal “The Crucial Role of Recess in School,” “children develop intellectual constructs and cognitive understanding through interactive, manipulative experiences” (Murray and Ramstetter 183). In other words, children experience and learn various cognitive skills that are not learned in a classroom, but during unstructured play at recess. If one were to study elementary students throughout the school day, he/she would notice that the children become inattentive and restless after sitting at a desk for a period of time. Recess gives children the time that they need to release energy to be able to come back to class more concentrated and productive. When recess is eliminated from elementary schools, these cognitive benefits and skills are lost. Even with more instructional time, most of it would be lost trying to get the children to pay attention throughout an entire school day. Along with cognitive benefits come social and emotional benefits. “Recess promotes social and emotional learning and development for children by offering them time to engage in peer interactions…” (Murray and Ramstetter 184). While interacting with other children at recess, students learn communication skills that they wouldn’t learn sitting in a classroom or at home. Some skills include cooperation, sharing, problem solving, and self-control. All of these skills are used throughout the rest of a child’s life and are vital to learn in order to be successful in the classroom as well as in future activities. Making the decision to ban recess strips children of the opportunity to learn and practice these traits. Not only are emotional, cognitive, and social opportunities taken away, but physical ones are as well. Many people in society today complain and argue about how obesity has taken over the country, and that children need to become more active.…

Many elementary schools have reduced or eliminated recess during the school day in an attempt to improve test scores. That has been especially true since the No Child Left Behind Act introduced in 2001. In order to allow for more instruction time for achievement standards to be met, more time was spent in the classroom resulting in something having to be cut out of the school day. In most cases, that is recess. However, doing so has not had the desired results and children have been losing out on very important aspects of their development. Having recess is vital to the development of children because it helps them to perform better academically in school, it gives them the opportunity to learn the social skills needed throughout life, and it improves their physical well-being.…

To begin with, eliminating recess is a good idea because it gives us that extra time to learn. We all know that the halls are crazy because of the limited time we have at our lockers, so we could use that time for lockers, because we all know some of our lockers are pretty small. Kids would have a lot more time to get organized, and so would the teachers. It would help to just eliminate recess and have more time!…

With all the work kids forget about outside and will get caught up in a hot new game or product. With recess not being provided students should get the option to play a sport or do gym all school year. Some middle schools should invest their time in making a new schedule. The schedule should start school a little bit earlier so there is time to fit in a gym class (“Pros and cons of middle school sports”). If a school does not have year round gym classes or recess students might not have anything else to do besides homework.…

Therefor I don’t think our school board should add time to each school day. I think we should keep our schedule starting at 7:30 and ending at 2:30. That way we can get home do chores, play and go to any afterschool activities. If we changed our school hours that would interfere with parents/guardians work schedules. Now with the schedules our school has we don’t get to restless with the teachers or other…

One of the reasons we think the school start time should stay the same is because it will make the time commitment of participating in after school activities more difficult to manage. All of us, like many other students, participate in after school activities. A later school start time will mean that school activities will start later and run even later than they do now. The later in the day it gets, the less energy we have to give 100% effort mentally. We will also be more physically tired which means if…

Our children are so important and the idea that our schools don’t see that is a scary thought. Recess has been a way to allow our kids to connect with others socially, build new bonds through similar interest, exercise, and refresh after sitting in a stuffy classroom for so long. Students need recess because just like our muscles need rest time to build after a workout, so do our brains. If we are constantly cramming information in, our brain will become over worked and we will start to experience major health problems in our kids. It is even worse now a day because we have technology to battle with. Students are learning that play time is on an IPad or cell phone. They are losing a very valuable and influential time in their lives.…

Activities and sports in schools is a great way for students to be involved, and to be active. I have done research and there hasn’t been one article I found on why sports shouldn’t be in schools. Having athletic programs and activities in schools are very helpful for students health, it develops team work, helps develop discipline and also perfection. School administrators, and parents, generally support high school activity programs because of the positive effect these activities appear to have on students of both genders. (Braddock P.1)…
