And the tougher the battle the longer the match, the more fun I had.” I love this quote from Jimmy Connors because the work, the fight, and the competition of tennis have had a serious influence on my character and my life. The attributes I have gained through tennis have taught me how to strive for my goals and to learn from my mistakes. They have taught me the importance of community and working with others as a team. They have provided me a mental toughness to face obstacles in my path. As I approach my college career, I hope to take these values with me.
Playing tennis teaches you to fight and work really hard to achieve your goals. Being a goal oriented person, like I am, requires patience and dedication. Committing to this sport for so long has taught me certain virtues that have helped me in my day to day life. I have had an advantage over some athletes because I have known most of my teammates since I began playing long ago. This opportunity has helped me understand how fragile others can be in the game and given me a sense of compassion. Some athletes are just looking out for themselves, but I understand that sometimes caring about your team and how well we all do overall is more important than just winning a match. You grow and bond with your team, coaches and even your competitors. That experience helps you learn your weaknesses and how to improve on them. I have never known a closer knit group than my team and I am thankful for what they have taught
