Gaylord was the first offical dormitory that was founded in 1884 (Perry et al. 54). Like other dorm rooms it was heated by steam (wood stoves) and had gas lighting (Perry et al 55 and 56). This shows how food was very scarce in 1800-1900’s. During this time the women had to go to the spring three hundred feet from each building for drinking water, but In Gaylord, cistern water is piped to every floor in ladies’ hall (Perry et al. 55). Water was hard to get as Crete had no water system (Perry et al. 55). Gaylord had many rooms. This dormitory had 42 rooms that housed 75-80 students (Perry et al. 56). This hall was different because the women teachers also reside (Perry et al. 57). I would not like my teachers being my RA in college. Reverend…
On April 11th, 1968, president Lyndon Johnson signed the Fair Housing Act of 1968. The act’s purpose was to eliminate discrimination during the sale, rental, and financing of a house based on someone’s race, religion, national origin, and gender. This bill difficulty passing as from 1966-67 congress regularly considered a bill similar to this but failed to because of lack of support. However, when Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, president Lyndon Johnson thought a way to commemorate his death was to quickly sign a bill regarding unfair housing because of discrimination. In addition, another issue that caused this bill to be signed was the amount of families of war heroes in Vietnam who could not purchase a home because of their race.…

There are many people that have been and that are still being discriminated by the actions they took or are taking. For example, Jon Krakauer, the author, himself was discriminated when nobody believed him when he had told them that he had climbed the Devil’s Thumb. Those were actions he took that nobody seemed to believe. In the novel “Into the Wild”, Jon Krakauer introduces the readers to what people have to say about Christopher McCandless. Shaun Callarman, an opinionist, states McCandless as bright, ignorant, crazy, and also says he has no common sense. However, not everybody views McCandless the same.…

Race should not determine whether a person gets a job, or a house. Unfortunately racial smog is real and it still plays a great part in catergorizing our generation.…
The reason behind this is because these are the races that are discriminated against the most. In my opinion everyone faces some type of racial disparity African Americans face it the most. I feel as though after the terrible events on 9/11, Arabic’s were being discriminated and judged because of their ethnicity. We are in a world where stereotyping has been a continuing factor. There are many factors that will help operate this policy to combat racial disparity and discrimination.…
When I say the word “immigrant” what comes to mind? A grown man trying to scam people of their hard earned money, a drug dealer who is on the run from the law, or a person trying to support their family and get a bright future? Do you think of a certain gender? Why do you think of these things when most of them are inaccurate? The answer is not clear at first, but once you dig deeper you can see the bias rooted in society. Most people who try to cross the border into this country are mistreated, taken advantage of, and are discriminated against once they enter.…

Uber has suffered from more than one discriminatory act. Choosing to repress this issue, they continue to give their company a bad name. Levin, in his article “Uber Manager told female engineer that ‘sexism is systemic in tech’” speaks of a software engineer Kamilah Taylor and her correspondence with Uber. Uber looking to recruit Taylor for a development position had responded to Taylor’s deny to work for the company with much disgrace. Due to the light of sexual harassment and sexism occurring in the company Taylor responds “that this is a terrible time to try and recruit women in tech to join Uber.” The manager (a women as well) disappointed with Taylor’s decision replied “I just want to say that sexism is systemic in tech and other industries.”…

Persons with disabilities face discrimination due to prejudice directed at them even today. We have come far and things have improved today (Henderson & Bryan, 2011). But discrimination based on race, ethnicity, gender, religion, disability, nationality, language/accent, and sexual orientation are still with us. A person belonging to a minority group (immigrant) with a disability faces other discrimination based on gender, ethnicity in addition to being discriminated due to her disability (Henderson & Bryan, 2011). Our behaviors and attitudes lead to discriminatory behaviors that negatively affect other persons. The information we get from the media about minority groups also shape mainstream cultural…
