A PASSION FOR COOKING
I grew up in Vietnam. I have two passions in my life which are Kung Fu and cooking. I studied Kung Fu when I was eleven years old. When I was twenty- four years old I worked at the Marriot hotel as a cook.
The first time I became a Kung Fu champion when I was fourteen years old in my city and I won two more times after that. My hobby when I was young was fighting with other kids because I always beat them. Once my mother told me, “If you want to have a good future you must quit Kung Fu and continue studying. You must have good education”. I cried a lot because I did not want to abandon fighting but I quit Kung Fu because of my mother whom I always respect.
I used to work eight years as a cook in my native country. I love cooking so that is the reason I spent a long time working in the hotel. I had a dream to study cooking in the United State where there are a lot of good chefs and many good schools. But the dream did not come true because it was expensive for my family. In 2011 I immigrated to the United States with my sister’s sponsorship. I looked for a job. But my English was not good. I found a job at a Vietnamese restaurant. The job was very hard with a low salary. But I needed that job because every month I must send the money to Vietnam for my daughter. I needed to practice speaking English more for a better job.
Every day, I was tired from speaking and listening to English and working at restaurant. Sometimes I spent a lot of time with my Vietnamese friends. Finally, I made a promise to myself. I said,” I will only see my Vietnamese friends once a week. I will speak more English”. I was self- disciplined. I made new friends from other countries. We spoke English together. I often went shopping. I spoke English to people in the stores. Soon I became comfortable speaking English. English sounded beautiful to me.
The last year, I decided to study at S.B.C.C. At first, the
