Scouting has been a huge part of my ever since I was very little. I joined cub scouts when I was in the first grade and went all the way up through cub scouts and then crossed over into boy scouts when I was old enough. The Boy Scout program was completely different than Cub Scouts to me. Cub Scouts is adult lead because the kids are not old enough to do things on their own but one of the main purposes of Boy Scouting is to install the ideas of leadership in the youth so Boy Scouts is “boy lead”. When I was first new into Boy Scouts I began getting used to the new idea of everything being boy lead and once I got the hang of it I ran for patrol leader. The basic structure of the troop is that the boys are split into smaller groups, patrols, and they are lead by the assistant patrol leader and the patrol leader and then above them and over the troop is the
I started off very young in a leadership position where I was in charge of many scouts, some older than me. Having to be in charge of older scouts was difficult at first but I soon gained their respect as leader and they began to listen. The basic duties of patrol leader are, taking charge of the patrol for rank advancements, teaching younger scouts, meal planning for the patrol for campouts, and assigning the patrol members specific tasks and responsibilities. While I was patrol leader I learned that I liked leading others and that I liked the responsibility of planning and working to make sure the troop ran smoothly and correctly. Once my term as patrol leader was up I decided that for the next election I was going to run for senior patrol leader. At the next election I ran for senior patrol leader along with five others. I ended up being voted by the troop to be the next senior patrol leader. Scouting has offered/offers me many service and leadership opportunities and I try to take advantage of as many of those opportunities as I
