I am my parent’s only child, a girl child, unwanted in the family; trying to break stereotypes since my childhood to stand as a strong and independent girl. From the beginning of my days, I am a witness to many doings of the people and the society, which are very unpleasant to my eyes.
Starting from my own house, my own family, I see my mother having not much of a say in family decisions, in spite of being a working lady and earning as much as my father does. I often hear noises of screeching from the lady next door when her drunk husband is home. Hence, my commitment, dedication and enthusiasm towards social work as a field of study is immense so as to acquire the skills, do things with proficiency and be more aware of what and how social work is to be put into operation. This, I believe will improve the quality of life and bring equality through justice at all levels in the society.
My mother, a peace loving person is the one who teaches me the skill of observation. Tells me often, how important it is to have the ability to listen to people, to their thoughts, their sufferings and everything that they want to share with us and that it helps one to communicate with others in the best way possible. My father, who is a loud person by nature and also quite dominating, especially over my mother, on the other hand, is a very big animal lover. In the city where people throw stones at the dogs, he pets dogs from the street. He gives them food to eat, clothes during winter, medication to the ones hurt and all that is required to take care of them. It is not just dogs but also cats and most other animals that he is concerned for. I used to play all types of game during school, from kho-kho, kabbadi to running races and table tennis. Professionally, I used to learn lawn tennis in a court called CTC (City Tennis Court) located in Guwahati itself. Dramas played an integral part of my life in school. Dramas having deep moral messages were definitely performed by us but another thing that is very impactful was the street plays performed on crucial issues, making them aware most times and other times mirroring their realities in front of them so that they can realize things and hence, move towards a better tomorrow.
