American Flag Symbolism Essay

“What then is freedom? The power to live as one wishes”, by Marcus Tullius Cicero. A flag, to some people may just be an object, to others it has meaning and an importance to them. In the editorial American Flag Stands For Tolerance, an American flag was burnt due to disagreement. The Supreme Court gives complete authorization for citizens to express themselves as they wish, as stated in the first Amendment “ Every citizen has the right to freedom of speech and expression”. However I am in complete disagreement towards the burning of any flag due to what the flag symbolizes, my own human moral limits, and because it's an act of extremism. A flag is not only an object, but a symbol of union within a country. In the US the flag symbolizes about 321 million free people welded in a nation, inseparable with sentiment and purpose. As stated in the article, “The American flag is a cherished symbol of our national aspirations” (Allen 10). In addition, the aspirations of a nation, refers to a goal desired to be accomplish by the people aiming towards the success of the country. Without the flag what else do citizens have to represent them, as stated “Given the widespread and deeply felt reverence for this symbol
Most people live up to their morals, however we do not all have the same morals. As briefly stated, “Any messages that burning the flag might convey easily can be communicated in other ways”(Allen 17). Depending on the viewers morals, it can be considered a serious offense, creating emotional damage. In the other hand, other viewers might not mind or even support the reason for the action taken. As once quoted “Give an inch they take a mile” meaning people take an advantage towards their freedom and morals not measuring actions and their
