One reason why I think animals should be used for testing is due to their similar biological structures to human beings. All mammals, including humans, have common ancestors, and all have the same set of organs. Because animals and humans are so biologically comparable, they are vulnerable to many of the same conditions and illnesses such as, cancer and blindness. Chimpanzees have 99% similarity with human DNA, and mice are 98% genetically coincidental to humans; consequently, they are the most frequent used animals in laboratories. The anatomic, metabolic, and cellular differences between animals and people make animals poor research subjects.
Another reason is that ethical considerations prohibit the use of human subjects in some cases. When the potential toxicity of medications is …show more content…
For example, laboratory mice live up to three years; furthermore, research can study the effects of treatments over a whole life span. Also, genetic manipulation in animals can prove efficiently the results of a treatment and even the consequences among several generations, which would be impractical using human subjects. It is expressed that animal tests do not reliably predict results in human beings in most of the studies. However, mice and rats are particularly convenient and precise in long term cancer
