Legal drugs, which made their way to public animals, kill approximately one hundred thousand people per year, and because more illegal drugs combined and cost the general public over one hundred thirty-six billion dollars in health care expenses (Greek). This amount of money could be saved if animal testing would come to a standstill. “The care and upkeep of primates other than chimpanzees are twenty to twenty-five dollars per day” (Conlee). The money would be more useful if it was not put towards animal testing where animal testing does not always work and is inconclusive. “The only U.S. law that governs the use of animals in laboratories – the Animal Welfare Act – allows animals to be burned, shocked, poisoned, isolated, starved, forcibly restrained, addicted to drugs, and brain-damaged (Berlatsky).
