Antecedents that Drive Business Results

Catherine Bale

Regis University

The business result I am focusing on in my organization is to decrease the turnover rate (increasing the retention rate) through increased employee satisfaction. Based on the desired behavior we are trying to promote, I have developed a list of antecedents to help drive that behavior and looked for positive and negative consequences. With the antecedents chosen, we are hoping to drive forward positive behavior and achieve our desired business result.
Antecendents
For each of my desired behaviors, I was able to put together 2-3 antecedents and also corresponding consequences for the actions. “All of us continuously respond to signals in our environment (antecedents) that lead to some action on our part (behavior), which in turn leads to something happening as a result of our action (consequences)” (Daniels & Bailey, 2014, 106). To increase employee satisfaction, the behaviors I chose are increased communication, increased opportunity for advancement, and increased employee recognition. These actions will all help to increase employee retention and make for a happier and more fun place to work. I also used a PIC/NIC analysis to help see what the consequences were for the antecedents chosen (see appendix). Most of the antecedents chosen are effective prompts and creating training experiences for the employees involved. “Antecedent stimuli can evoke the right response for the situation or the wrong response (from the perspective of the “sender” or what was intended)” (“Antecedents”, 2014).
Increased Communication Increased communication can occur with many antecedents but I chose to focus on just a few. Team member surveys are important to do quarterly in order to get some sort of dialogue going about how things are in regards to the business. These surveys should be handled by the management and should be looked at and evaluated during

When working together communicating effectively is important. It helps a team understand what is expected of them as well as outlining important information and goals. A variety of methods can be used to achieve this i.e. meeting, email, bulletins and information boards and the most important decision required is “What is the best way to relay this message?” A consideration is also required as to who the audience is as this will affect the decision on how information is relayed. In some circumstances communicating via email is acceptable, this is generally best when the information needs to be passed quickly to a lot of people, or if it’s an update that can be read when they have free time to do so. If an urgent update is needed or change to work it is always best to use face to face in a meeting. This will enable you to be able to answer any queries or even to seek ideas from the team if required. It is always best to communicate with your team regularly to ensure that any problems/issues can be caught early and acted upon. For statistics to measure areas of concern/ productivity an information board displaying these in a visual display could also be useful. By…
