Argumentative Essay: Is Animal Testing Worth Being Safe?

Animal testing may go against your morals, but is it worth being safe? Animal testing is a very controversial topic in which most people believe is wrong. Most people who believe that it is wrong have invalid reasons of why they think that way. Although it goes against your morals, it is a necessity because it provides a safe way for us to test products, find out why certain things cause birth defects, and for us to be able to find cures for specific diseases. It may seem harsh, but this is the reality we live in. It’s difficult to understand what a person believes in without looking at the facts. Animals are tested on for scientific and medical research. Certain animals share a large portion of DNA with humans, which causes the process of
finding things that are safe to become a lot easier. Items, such as plants or animals, that are relatively similar in DNA are capable of contracting similar diseases, along with being able to transfer diseases between different animals. It is fairly easy to control the environment around animals, which would be very difficult to do with a human. Every human has a different way of thinking, and some can survive depending on what environment they are put into. Animals like rats make it easy to control the environment around them and adapt fairly quickly, which is why most animal testings are done on rats. Diseases such as blindness are very hard to study through bacteria, which is an alternative to animal testing. Most cosmetic products are tested on animals, because some products used in your makeup can potentially be harmful. Without this testing, many of the products used today would not be sold by large manufacturers. This would cause many vaccines and medicines to be taken off of shelves, because they are unhealthy to the human body which would result in many people dying and the population would greatly suffer. It is necessary to use animals in order to find research that could potentially cure diseases such as morning sickness during pregnancy. A drug called Thalidomide was used to help prevent morning sickness. After doing some tests and research, it was shown that the drug may cause birth defects. It would be a very difficult and long process to find research on the drug using humans. Pregnant animals such as mice had to be tested on. Since they have a very short time for pregnancy, scientists were able to get the data back in a short period, along with being able to test the effects of Thalidomide on several different babies at a time. This allowed scientists to have a better understanding of what causes the mutations and made it possible for them to find an alternative way to prevent morning sickness. Scientists were able to fix the medicine to prevent morning sickness and make it better than the one before. This made the scientists capable of preventing other things relating to morning sickness. It seems incredibly strange and impossible, but animal testing actually benefits the animal itself.
Scientific research shows that pets, livestock, and animals in zoos live longer, more comfortable, and healthier lives as a result of animal research. Vaccines for rabies, and other diseases that animals are capable of catching, would not be created without the help of animal testing and research. Diseases such as the ones listed above could potentially kill off and harm a population or species. Rabies and other diseases can be passed on between animals. Things like research on the sexual behavior of animals has made it possible to breed many species in captivity, enabling endangered species to be reintroduced to the wild. This can be a very useful tool and makes us capable of protecting endangered animals. Scientists are able to control the environment of animals, and that allows them to be able to tell what will happen depending on what environment a species lives in. With this information, scientists are able to help a species or population grow. Animal testing benefits both humans and animals. It allows vaccines to be created for diseases that could potentially kill off a whole species. It is necessary in order for us to be able to eat the food we eat, and use the products we use. Without animal testing, many products would be unsafe to use. This could cause many things to be taken away from stores and a ton of things would not be good for human usage. A ban on the testing
of animals would result in the ban of certain products, which could potentially cure diseases. This would affect the population greatly. Who would you rather see live?
