Audiology Personal Statement
When asked what I wanted to do as a profession, I would scourer away with uncertainty and fear. The pressure of deciding my life’s career choice mixed with newfound freedom and hormone-filled college freshman adventures proved to be some of the most stressful times in my life. I remember constantly turning to friends and family members for advice just to find myself alone at my computer desk with bloodshot, tissue-soar eyes. It was not until April of my freshman year that those same eyes that once cried out stress now cried tears of relief and joy. I would like to thank my wonderful mother. One day when I felt down on my luck my mother sent me a video where I watched newborn babies to grown adults hear for the first time with the use of cochlear …show more content…
It was not until my junior year that I took my first course in audiology, although this was just an introduction, I found myself yearning for more exposure in the audiology field. This fall, I began my observations in the James Madison University Audiology clinic. During my first week of observing in the clinic I was fascinated by the bond between the audiologist and their patients. The opportunity that observations have given me has far surpassed my expectations with not only the hands-on experience but has allowed me to strictly apply all of my knowledge previously gained throughout my courses of study at James Madison …show more content…
Not only was I the first person in my family to pursue a college education, but I am also first to earn a bachelor’s degree and pursue a doctoral degree. I feel that knowing this throughout my undergraduate career has motivated and pushed me to not only complete my goals, but to go above and beyond in each one of my courses. For the past two years, I have been elected to hold four leadership positions: two vice president positions, public relations coordinator, and Success Networking Team coordinator. Currently, I hold a vice president position in the National Student Speech Language and Hearing Association (NSSLHA) as well as the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS). Holding these two leadership positions for the past two years has expanded and inspired my desire to help individuals in need. I feel that I have grown to become an effective leader through the use of guiding other members to become successful in their endeavors. Although rewarding, I encountered many challenges while holding these two positions. Each organization requires high demands, which results in poor membership engagement. As vice president, I took it upon myself to increase involvement. Each week, I would reach out to individuals of both organizations in hopes that members would want to be more involved. I attended every event as well as every requirement, putting in at least five hours a week into both

The diagnosis process of a hearing loss often begins with the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening (UNHS). Hearing loss is considered one of the most common disabilities in the United States (Jackson, Traub, & Turnbull, 2008). Before the UNHS was widely implemented in 1990s, physicians, medical personnel, and teachers were responsible for detecting hearing loss through a long referral process (Fitzpatrick et al., 2008). Now, the UNHS helps identify children with hearing loss as infants to improve their learning and communication outcomes (Fitzpatrick, Angus, Durieuz-Smith, Graham, & Coyle, 2008). After children are screened, follow-up assessments are given and early intervention services are provided to the child (Fitzpatrick…

A self-employed business man once said, “The best example of leadership is leading by example” (Jerry McClain). He describes a true leader, a pioneer whose morals and selflessness guide her to guide others. She is an inspiration, and a beacon of hope for all to follow. I share this passion for helping and guiding by example, and as a member of the National Junior Honor Society, I would seek to better the community just as I do every day inside and outside of the classroom.…

From there, I hope to study to be accepted into medical school and specialize in pediatrics. When preparing for medical school, the advice one hears are to become a well-rounded student. Through my DECA experiences I have been able to develop leadership skills that will help me thrive in my future. Over the three years I have been involved, I have stepped out my comfort zone and made a difference in my local DECA chapter, community, and my future. Now taking the responsibility of being a DECA officer, as the chapter president, has allowed me to continue to grow and develop my leadership, communication, and social skills. Working with the Milan DECA Chapter members has proven how difficult and enjoyable being a leader is. At times leading so many events can be stressful; however, the completion of the events pushes me further. In order to reach the goal of becoming ‘well-rounded’, I used DECA skills to organize my time to join other extracurriculars within my community. Along with DECA, I participate in 4-H which is a non-profit organization in counties all across the nation that prepares youth to make a positive impact on their communities. Furthermore, I lead my 4-H club in a Relay For Life team through the American Cancer Society. Additionally, I am a dedicated musician, drum major, and the first Milan High School Flute Choir Director. I am an active participant in the peer education program at Milan High School. I am so thankful for the opportunities to be a leader within my class, school, community, county, and…

Throughout my high school career, I have been given numerous opportunities to lead other students by example, work ethic, volunteerism, and school involvement. I believe that my greatest impact as a leader in high school has been through my participation in a Service Learning Class. This class gave me the chance to help and lead others by tutoring younger students in the middle school and elementary school. As a senior, I felt responsible for providing a voice for the class in ideas and decisions to help better our school. I worked with administrators, teachers, and class members to promote healthy habits of responsibility, school pride, respect, and service.…
