Another reason that Beecher Prep made a positive impact on Auggie’s life is because August was recognized for being a great person. On page 304, Mr. Tushman is explaining what makes a person great; ‘“Courage. Kindness. Friendship. Character.”’ He then presents the greatness award; ‘“So will August Pullman please come up to receive this award?”’ (page 304). This positively impacts August in a grand way, respecting the way he is in front of many students. “‘Way to go Auggie!” “Nice going Auggie!” I even started hearing my name being chanted: “Aug-gie! Aug-gie! Aug-gie!”’ (page 305). This surreal moment of August accepting his award and being cheered on by all of his classmates solidifies the fact that Beecher Prep left a positive impact on his…

The five students - Allison, Andrew, Bender, Brian, and Claire - who seem to have nothing in common at first, come together at the high school library, where they are harangued and ordered not to speak or move from their seats by the antagonistic principal, Richard Vernon (Paul Gleason). They are to remain for a period of eight hours and fifty-four minutes (from 7:06 A.M. to 4 P.M., the only indication of time being on a clock that is 20 minutes fast). He assigns a 1,000 word essay (in which each student must write about who he or she thinks they are) and then leaves them mostly unsupervised, returning only occasionally to check on them. Bender, who has a particularly negative relationship with Mr. Vernon, disregards the rules and riles the other students; mocking Brian and Andrew, and sexually harassing Claire. Allison remains oddly quiet except for the occasional random outburst.…

Via is August’s big sister and is very caring towards Auggie and is extremely protective of him. Via helps the reader get a better understanding of what August looks like and what he’s like at home. An example for this is when via says, “His eyes are about an inch below where they should be, about half way down his cheeks. They slant downward at an extreme angle, like diagonal slits down his face. His eyelids sag so much you can see the red in his eyes. It looks like a piece of invisible string pulling his eyelids down. He doesn’t have eyebrows or eye lashes and his nose is far to big for his face. He doesn’t have cheek bones and people sometimes assume he’s been burnt in a fire because all his features are melted. He has a few scars because of all the surgeries his upper teeth splay out. A piece of his hip bone was put into his jaw and he has no chin at all”. The author put this in the novel because it makes he reader think how hard it would be to have a face like that and can’t help feeling sorry for him.…

Kindness is such a simple thing that so many teens and adults alike have a hard time doing. The desire to be socially accepted sometimes outweighs the pros of being kind to others. In Palacio’s book Wonder, readers are introduced to a character named August Pullman. August is challenged with a facial deformity that causes him to look different than others. He has received many surgeries to fix some of the issues, but because of his surgeries, August has never went to school. At the age of ten his parents decided it was time for August to go to school. They enrolled August into a private academy so that the burden of school would not be a difficult task to handle. August knew going in that students would not be okay with the way he looked, but he took the plunge anyways. August was a smart kid and knew some day he was going to have to face the world. Who would have thought it would have been during prime time middle school. August was “like a lamb to the slaughter” who was struggling to survive middle school. He needed a friend like Christopher who would look past his physical appearance. He was in need of a small act of kindness. Throughout the book, August received many small act of kindness. However, those acts of kindness did not come without a price. See for teens, when they are scared of something or someone they try and make the life of others around them more difficult. In…

We were both judged strictly on our appearance rather than our character. During the first week of school, Auggie was often thought to be stupid and unattractive because of the way he looked. For example, Auggie expressed a desire to take honors science, a statement that shocked his fellow classmates. They doubted his intelligence and ability to successfully complete the course. Additionally, people thought he was scary which made it very difficult for him to make friends. While I was still new to the school, many were astonished to find out I was taking multiple honors classes, doubting my academic abilities. I also surprised people when I revealed my strength in P.E. My classmates made their own conclusions about me based on my size and demeanor instead of getting to know me. Both Auggie I had to overcome incorrect first impressions of our peers based solely on our physical features.…
