The class from the school to the dart staion where we waited for Mr. Tansey to arrive at the dart station. While we waited we talked about what we had all done voer the summer, and what tha plans would be for results night. As the dart arrived at the station we al got ready to get on and sit down on our way to Salthill. To our dissapointement, there were no available seats so we were forced to stand! The few that were left standing, which included me, chatted about what we thought the sailing would entail. Then, once again to our dissapointment, one of the lads noticed that there was no wind! a result, we could not sail, so we kayaked. We walked up from the dart station to the centre and on the way, hoped that maybe the wind would pick up, but our hopes and dreams were all dead at this stage....
When we got to the centre we were greeted by two men, one was quite small, and the the other was average. The were both wearing wet-suits up to their waists, and were equipped with strange looking waterproofed electronics. We were directed into a room towards tha back of the building. Around the walls there were chairs and in the corner was a televison. Also there was a whiteboard. When were all seated comfortably we had a short talk with our instructors about the day ahead of …show more content…
us. As he talked more and more about what was ahead of us, we all got progressively more excited.
By the time we had our wet-suits and life-jackets on we were all anxious to get into the water! We all helped take our kayaks down to the bay and we were briefly shown how to use the paddle. We were then allowed to launch off into the water. Kayaks and paddles were flying left, right and centre as everyone rushed into the bay and by the time we were all in, things started to calm down and everyone started to get used to the feel of the boats. After a couple of minutes the instructors showed up in their speed boats. After a good warm up and a few capsises, were were brought out towards the open sea! While leaving the harbour the waves got bigger every few metres and it started to get a little harder to paddle, but it was nothing we couldnt
handle. The instructors said to sail out to Dalkey Island! We hoped to God that they were'nt serious, and they were'nt! We started to row towards the Island for a while before the instructors told us to wait for the others to catch up. As it was hard to stay in one positin in the water, i had to keep paddling around. A large speed boat glided past me at high speed, this caused large aggressive waves to gather. As the first wave came towards me i tried to get away, but it was too fast. As it got closer it started to suck me towards it, and before i knew it, i was almost vertical on the wave. It swept me hard and fast and before i knew it i was seperated from my boat and paddle and was still stuck in this unstoppable monster. My classmates watched as i drifted further and further away. Then, all of a sudden the wave started to drop and i was sucked underneath the water. Luckily, my life-jacket pulled me up to the surface. The catastrophe was over and the instructors came to my rescue, although by the time they had come i had realised how funny it probably looked and was laughing at the situation. All the kayaks were tied one after another by a rope and then the first boat was attatched to the instructors vessel. Were then pulled along in a huge line back to the shore, it was quite a funny journey, as the people chilling on the harbour watched and laughed at as us.. Also, alot of people fell off their boats and that included me. I was at the start of the line and if the instructor turned too sharply my kayak would capsize. I eventually got my balance and could handle these "sly'' turns he was making. We then reached the shore and were untied. We lay flat on our boats and paddled vigorously to the slip-way. Everyone helped again to bring their kayaks and paddled up to the rack and wer then allowed to jump into the water off the slip-way. It wasnt very good jumping in but we did find some dead crab's that looked alot more fun to watch.. After a couple of minutes we had to go back inside and get changed. We found out that there was warm showers so we had to go into them of course! we had another short talk woth the instructors and he said that we would recieve a certificate later on in the year. It was a fun enjoyable day and i would consider going again!
