Communication is about people connecting with people to exchange knowledge or ideas from one person to another; which involves a sender transmitting an information or feeling to a receiver. Robbins (1987) has stated “The quality of your life is the quality of your communication”.
McPheat (2010) has stated “Communication is the art of creating and sharing ideas. Effective communication depends on the richness of those ideas.” Effective communication is one of the most widely understood and controversial topics, as we send, receive, and process huge numbers of messages every day. We can call it effective communication only if the receiver understands the exact information or idea that the sender intended to transmit. It is about more than just exchanging information, as it helps you to understand the emotion behind the information. The more effort you put in, the more it develops your communication skills. Dewey (1902) has stated “There is all the difference in the world between having something to say and having to say something.”
The five characteristics of effective communication are practical, factual, clear, concise, and persuasive. Communicating effectively reduces misunderstandings and confusion that occurs when the information sent by the sender fits the above characteristics, as a result it saves time and good plans can be spotted so easily, also it saves you from embarrassment from assuming incorrect things. This form of communication improves and combines a set of skills including nonverbal communication, listening actively, stress management, and to recognize your own emotions and those of the person you’re communicating with. It also creates a fruitful environment where a diverse group of people can share their thoughts, feelings, and views, which will help them to solve conflicts and work together as one.
