It was the time when Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump were candidates for the election of the president. When I came to the US for the first time it was like I am blind and could not see anytime because I was new to all the roads that were going we our road, on top of us, etc. In the the US they use to say that if you don't know how to drive then you are without legs, if you don't know the roads then you are blind, if you don't know English then you are dumb. When I came to the US I knew how to speak English a little bit. It was very difficult to settle in US. When I came to the US it was hard for me and my family to settle it this culture.

I and my family were new to this place, but my uncle helped the US a lot we lived with them for 5-6 months and then we got the house for rent we moved here. But still, whenever we need his help he is always there to help us. He filled the application for my admission and on the

I was very weak in English and I had a hard time to understand what teachers were saying to me. But my ESL teacher was helping me a lot. She uses to stay with me in my English class and help me with my homework. I had lots of a hard time doing my homework. Like me, even my brother had a hard time for his college. But he got ejected with the nature of the US. When I came the next week was the Halloween week. I went to the treacle tree. We all went I didn't know what to do then my younger brother explained to me what is this Halloween. The Halloween is like one of the Indian festivals.

I remember my first day in America like it just happened yesterday! I moved to America from India when I was just 12 year old. When I started my journey to America, I was getting mixed feelings, one side I was excited to go to America I saw in movies and wanted to be a part of great American culture but on the other side I was feeling sad about leaving behind my friends and place I was born and spent my childhood. But when Pilot announced that we are about to reach to Houston in 30 minutes I got anxious and opened my seat window. When I looked Houston through plane window, cars on freeway looked like ants’ running in one line and that was really interesting to me.…

In the short story “Toward Something American the Immigrant Soul,” author Peter Marin discusses how immigrants feel coming to live in America. Immigrants coming to a new country, basically a new world to them, feel misplaced. We as Americans see immigrants struggle on an everyday basis, not realizing that we do the same. We are the same, just from different parts of the world. Americans have this sense that people from other countries are not as we are. Immigrants see America has being a free country, a place to become you. “Home” is for us, as it is for all immigrants, something to be regained, created, discovered, or mourned-not where we are in time or space, but where we dream of being.…

Every year a large amount of children and women take on the challenge of traveling to the United States, some legally, some illegally. Considering the risks women and children take everyday living in Central America, coming the the United States is a very big opportunity and uncertainty they are willing to take. It does not surprise me that an immense amount of people make the trip to America because of the positive possibilities mothers are given when arriving, especially when they come to make money to support loved ones they left behind. Although this decision is not surprising and is well understood, i do not agree with this choice that is made.…

I came to America about 13 years ago from Sri Lanka and I’ve had experiences in this country that I think are very unique. Both of my parents worked so hard to bring my brother and I to America, because they knew that if we wanted the best future we’d have to be here. I never truly realized the impact America has had on me and my family. I come from an Indian/Sri Lankan background and being able to see so much acceptance of our culture here is truly amazing. Although I have had experiences with racism here, I think these last 2 years have made a huge impact on diversity and truly accepting that everyone is equal.…

In Northern and Central America, there are thousands upon thousands of people who travel to the United states to try and solve their family’s financial crisis. A truly surprising idea; if people decide to work so hard for their families away from them, why not try to fix their problems where they are? The reason for this being brought up, is traveling to somewhere ‘better’ such as the United states will not always bring a much better fortune. The danger that ensues with traveling up to the US is far too dangerous, with gangs willing to rob, beat, or rape anyone that passes and police that show no mercy in brutality. Along with the dangers of just traveling up there, people in the United States can stand rather racist towards anyone they do not like.…

Instead of our average class on September 12th, we got to interview immigrants from different places around the world. Two of these people were from Brazil, one was from Mexico, and the other was all the way from China. All of them were very polite, and I could understand them quite well to my surprise. I figured since they were immigrants they would have trouble speaking English. However, I was wrong, and one of the ladies I interviewed has a degree in Bio Linguistics. During the meeting, I learned many personal things about the immigrants. Some told us their hardships trying to get to America. Others described how interesting it was to be in America compared to just seeing it on television. However, there are three major topics I learned…

People often say things about how the United States, with its revolutionary political and economic system, must have been around for a long time in order to achieve the world standing it holds today. This isn’t the case though. In fact, when compared to great civilizations like the Roman Empire which lasted almost 12 centuries, many would say that the United States is still in its infancy. Much in the same way, the political and economic systems the U.S. is famous for are seen to be derived from past civilizations as well. But this of course leads us to asking the inevitable questions of where did it all begin, and what caused people to settle here in America of all places. In order to answer this however, we have to look back past explorers and crusades. Past the kings, uprisings, revolts, and trade routes. We must go back in time to the Roman Empire itself, specifically in the year 476 BCE; the time when everything was falling apart in Rome.…
