People use video games as a scapegoat to violence, but since video games have started booming, crimes started dropping. Most people are focused on negative effects for the children that play the video games. When the media does start bagging on video games, it's mostly something bad about them (unless a game breaks a record for how many copies it has sold).
The media has caused more violence than some of the video games on the market. For example, in the 1980’s “Dr.Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” was blamed for encouraging Jack the Ripper. (Radford) It's pretty much a culture war between the Hollywood scene and the gaming scene. Not only are video games being attacked, but so are other forms of entertainment like rappers, musicians, and even some tv shows and movies. (Meeks) Violent video games are an easy thing to blame for a more difficult problem. This being said, some people think that video games should be regulated on the matter of how much violence they are “teaching” the people who play the video game. In my honest opinion, video games shouldn’t be used as a society’s violent outbreaks scapegoat. The Rating system has two formats the ESRB and the MPAA the ESRB is for video games the MPAA being for the movies.But when it comes to violence and you blame the video game they have a great rating system that parents should be paying attention to before they buy their kid the newest video game out there. Now about 87% of parents are aware of these rating systems but only 61% of parents check the rating on the game
