Everything in life has a Price: Even an Education

“Nothing comes free, not even good, especially not good”. - Lyndon B. Johnson
People believe that making college free for everyone would solve many problems faced today, but that is very wrong. The term “free” as an adverb means without cost or payment. Free college will never exist because society will have to pay higher taxes to accommodate everyone that wishes to receive a higher education. The public believes that a free college education will increase the success rate of a student, and that they may feel motivated to earn their degree. In all cases in life people take more pride and better care of what they pay for. If students are going to school on someone else’s dime they will not take

The job field is competitive enough, and adding free tuition will make it impossible for everyone to receive employment. Free college will be a continuation to high school. Most students do not take high school seriously, so what is stopping them from treating high school and college the same? According to a Charleston Gazette-Mail article, “West Virginia has a twenty-four percent college has completion rate for a four-year degree. West Virginia also ranked eighth lowest in college completion rates”. If students do not have to pay for college there would not be any motivation to keep them there. Everything comes with incentives even high school. High school students are not allowed to drop out of school until they are sixteen. The age requirement is keeping the students in school. Free tuition will also take away the competitive nature that college is known for. The quality of the degree will decrease. People who advocate free college are risking the quality of the education. Reducing the competitive nature will also reduce the competiveness in the work force. Most high school students put in the hours to complete essays to …show more content…
People in American history worked hard to become successful, and there should be nothing stopping the current generation from putting in the same effort. A dollar sign should not stop anyone from accomplishing their goals in life. One must possess drive and determination to receive a college degree. To maintain the quality of education colleges should keep required tuition in place. Clothes, food, and shelter are necessary cost for life, no one argues against that. People are willing to pay for essentials, but not an education. Is an education no longer a necessity? The unemployment rate should not increase because of the devaluation of degrees. If one looks at the data, the bigger problem is that many students don’t finish college. “Only about 55 percent of students graduate six years after starting,” Bob Luebke (a writer for the Civitas Institute.) The problem is not access but completion. So why do people drop out of college? For the most part, money is not the biggest problem; it’s usually factors like family issues, or transportation. Providing free tuition to institutions that graduate only a small amount over 50 percent of their students does not make economic sense. Also, if college tuition does become free for students, colleges will attract more young people who are not suited for college and will most likely drop out as well as more students that will major in fields with little or no market…

Free community college would put even less pressure on high schools to produce graduates who are prepared for college-level work, as they could expect the new free community colleges to fill in what the high schools are failing to do. The proposal is more likely to produce a six-year high school system than a two-year gratis workforce preparation experience” (Burke). Numerous people would take advantage of the “FREE” two year college courses, and community colleges would more than likely be bombarded with students looking for a free ride.
