Henry, a girl is faced with a heartbreaking diagnoses; which at that time they didn't quite understand how to treat it. She was accepting at first and was okay, but soon changed her mind based on her belief. She thought her existence depended on whether or not a leaf fell off or stayed attached to a vine. If it fell off it meant she would die. To find the answer to what she thought was her last day, she opened the blind to the window and saw her fate, “ But, lo! After the beating rain and fierce guests of winds that had endured through the livelong night, there yet still stood out against the brick wall one leaf.” (Henry 8). As that last leaf still hung there she knew it was a sign that she would persevere through the tough time. At first, the girl didn't believe that the leaf would stay on the vine through the fierce winds, but later in the story realized that the old man who lived below her had painted the leaf on the brick wall to give her hope. Hope that if the leaf could withstand the wind and strong rain, then so could she.
