There are many heated controversial topics in our society. Gun safety and gun laws is one of those topics. In the United States, there are currently a debate on the eight-fourth Texas Legislative. A new law has been signed, which will allow college students to carry guns on campus. There have many college shootings in our history. The weakness of Pro-Guns is the campus crime rates are against them. In a study during 2010, it states that only .05 percent of all reported crimes are murder, 79.16 percent are non-violent crimes. The crimes that are more regularly reported are sexual assault crimes. Another study handled by the Secret Service, the Office of Education, and the FBI was done around the same year. They analyzed 272 crimes that happened between 1900 to 2008. Guns were used in 54 percent of the cases, but 60 percent of the cases the criminal attacked somebody they had known. The chances of another “Virgina Tech Massacre” are very slim (Birnbaum). The strength of Pro-Guns argument is what if another shooting massacre did happen on the college campuses. The criminal would less likely attack if they believed the students and professors around them had firearms (Birnbaum). Anti-Guns have their own strengths and weaknesses. The weakness of Anti-Guns is that teachers would have to change the way they teach in a classroom setting with the new law. This law has caused many debates throughout the universities. Many professors believe that they need to avoid controversial topics because of the new law. Other professors believe that teachers need extra training due to this new law (Reilly). For example, According to KXAN News, recently at Texas State University a student was held at gunpoint when four males robbed the victim while walking across campus between Evans and Flowers Hall (Beausoleil). There are two political views this could be examined at. The side of Security – The Anti-Guns – might argue this situation would never happen if campus carry was never passed. The side of Liberty – The Pro-Guns – might argue situations like this is exactly why this law is needed. As Captain America tells Iron Man, “My faith is in people, I guess. Individuals. And I’m happy to say for the most part, they haven’t let me down” (Feige). Even though, people do make mistakes through the side of liberty other people can protect one another with the campus carry law that is
