The history of guns in America is a long one, but they were first introduced to the world long before they were introduced to the United States. According to Linton Weeks,the first guns in the world were most likely cannons used in the fourteenth century. There were also hand cannons carried by European soldiers (Weeks). This expresses that guns have been around much longer than the United States has. After cannons, there was the muzzle loader. This has been a very controversial topic around the United States. Some believe that guns are necessary to protect schools from attackers, “‘Most schools just lock the doors and hope for the best’, he said. ‘If a bad person comes to our school, that person is leaving in a body bag and your kid is coming home safe’”(“The Heart of the Gun Crisis”). This expresses that if concealed weapons in schools are used correctly, students can be better protected than without guns. Firearms are a better safety option than locking the door and hoping that nothing horrible happens. This could result in the number of student deaths and the number of school shootings decreasing and overall positively affecting society. Another reason some schools need firearms for protection is because they could be too far off from the police and they could take too long to get to the school and stop the shooter before he or she induces great harm. Hanover is a school in Colorado with little civilization or authorities nearby to protect them in case of emergency. It can take up to an hour for authorities to reach the school. This is far too long for a shooter to be in a school without being stopped (“The Heart of the Gun Crisis”). The use of firearms carried by staff could drastically reduce the time until the shooter is stopped and save the lives
