Higher Religion Than Human Service
There is no higher religion than human service. To work for the common good is the greatest creed” (Woodrow Wilson). There isn’t anything as important as working together for the common good of our community; personally, this would mean to bring change and cooperate with others to create an impact. I believe that volunteering is not only about completing the necessaries hours to graduate, it's also about helping the vulnerable and the less fortunate or even helping to doing little things that can improve our communities. Another reason why I believe it's important to serve others is that you’re strengthening your connection with God, because God did not put this on this planet to only think about ourselves, but also as Catholics to carry out the seven themes of Social Catholic Teachings, which tells us that it's our duty to take care of one another and to take care of our Earth. There have been a few volunteer opportunities that I’ve been very fortunate to attend. One of those was at the Children’s Museum. The task that I was assigned to was to clean up, read and help set up games for the children. I learned that places like these are incredibly, because it provides the families an opportunity to make extraordinary memories and connect with other kids. Another opportunity I had was helping out at the Renaissance Dinner at Prospect United Methodist Church. There I learned that being a part of a community is extremely important, it brings people together and gives them a sense of belonging, so my responsibility in this event was to when servers were done serving, I along with other students from St.Paul’s would bring the dirty dishes downstairs to be cleaned. I’m also involved in the sewing and food club at the school which provided me with service opportunities; for example, I’ve been involved in school activities such as Light Up St.Paul, making and giving

Volunteering for service hours changed my outlook on life. I worked with the Hydrocephalus Association in both eleventh and twelfth grade. The Hydrocephalus Association focuses on three things community, clarity, and cure. Hydrocephalus is a condition defined by an abnormal, excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the cavities of the brain. Some people with this condition can live a normal life being unnoticeable while other have difficulties. The association works on awareness to find a cure, clarity in helping families further understand the condition, and a community which will always be supportive. Service hours can sometimes be a hassle but once I started volunteering with that association it became fun because I was…

Have you had any volunteer experiences and, if so, what did you like about participating? Give at least one example of what you liked. I have volunteered with Canterbury United Methodist Church on a mission trip and the Birmingham Zoo. When I volunteered with Canterbury, we went on a mission trip to Asheville, North Carolina for a week during the summer. I had the opportunity to travel to another city, in a different state, to help those who are less fortunate and live in harsh conditions. Seeing the harsh conditions that some people live in was very eye-opening for me because it really made me realize how fortunate, not only I, but the rest of my community is. I loved helping the people in Asheville because I knew that it is something they…

Another example of helping my school community is setting up for Winter Formal. Key Club is a club that accumulates all of the values and ethics of service. As of this year, I have become a part of this organization. Now I like to sign up for as many volunteer opportunities as my time permits, and this club provides me with many of those. I have a lot of fun every time I contribute to these events and believe that these opportunities improve me as a person.…

Volunteering has always been an important aspect of my life. Whether donating food or painting a house, it has allowed me to be extremely grateful and humble for my lifestyle because everybody is not as blessed as I am. Volunteering has taught me that even the smallest gift, such as a smile, can be a great gift to someone because it can show that you care and want to be involved. It has allowed me to develop soft skills, and learn more about myself and my HBCU community. One of my greatest accomplishment in life was that I volunteered 1,000 hours in high school.…

This past summer I was part of the leadership staff at Camp Howard. I was a unit director for the 1st and 2nd graders who came to camp for the day. This unit consisted of 30 campers and 4 counselors whom I was in charge of. I am also the treasurer of the College of Democrats and I volunteer with multiple organizations. For example, I help students and community members register to vote and I work closely with the office of Lane County of Democrats. I volunteer with the National Society of Collegiate Scholars by holding toy drives for homeless shelters. Another service experience I've had is volunteering with the Sparrow Club in my hometown. The Sparrow Club helps…

Last year, I went to Pinetree Preschool, where there is nothing but young children. That was an experience I enjoyed and found so valuable and opened my eyes to the potential and possibilities of children. This year, I chose the complete opposite of Pinetree and I volunteered at Primrose, a retirement home for people who suffer from alzheimer's or dementia. At Primrose, I saw a completely different side of human life. That may seem like an exaggeration but I tend not to spend much time with people much, much older than me, as they were at Primrose. I learned an incredible amount of patience and understanding and just life in general during my time volunteering at Primrose, that I could not had received anywhere else.…
