Mrs. Lee
Speech

Gun Control The topic of gun control has been brought up time and time again this year. The people of the United States have varying opinions on this matter. Some believe they have heard enough and think the laws are fine; however, others think a change in the laws governing gun control need revising now! What arguments do each side have? First of all, what is gun control? One source identifies it as ‘efforts to regulate sales of guns’ (wordnetweb.princton.edu). People take their ideas from moderate to extreme on both sides. This sets the stage for several issues and debates. A question many Americans have asked is who owns the guns in our country. According to a recent study, 23% is owned by non-white peoples. Twenty-seven percent of people from the North East reported owning guns. Thirty-two percent of Catholics admit to have guns in their homes. Thirty- two percent of democrats possess them. Up to 36% of people not affiliated with a particular political party own them. Thirty-six percent of the Independent Party owns them. Forty-one percent of people from the West are reported to own guns. Nearly half (42%) of the Southern population owns firearms. …show more content…
Forty-six percent of males own guns. Over half (51%) of the population of white men and women own fire arms. Fifty-three percent of people from the Midwest own guns. Sixty percent of the Republican Party owns some kind of gun, firearm, or weapon. And, lastly, 63% of the Tea Party own guns. (publicreligion.org, 2)
Those who oppose new laws always bring up the point that we have the “right to bear arms” (guninformation.org, 1B). Many state that those who use the gun for illegal purposes do not obtain the fire arms legally anyway; so, why punish the entire country (guninformation.org, 4A). Other anti-gun control supporters claim it takes away means of personal protection for themselves and their families. Many push the point that having gun in the home can protect families from home invasions, threats made in the streets, etc. (guninfromation.org, 4). However, for every argument made by anti-gun control groups, there is a pro-gun control group waiting with a rebuttal to defend their opposing opinion.
Many pro-gun control groups look deeper into the Second Amendment than the first clause. They consider phrases like “well regulated” to say that the government has the right to make and enforce laws pertaining to our gun rights (guninformation.org, 1B-2B). They challenge the statement of criminals being the only ones with access to guns by saying that with new, strictly enforced laws that guns and other weapons will become harder and harder to obtain(guniformaion.org, 4A). They point out that statistics show people with in their home are more likely to be victim in murders and suicides (guninformation.org, 4A).
What do many Americans want?
Much of the nation just wants a little compromise. Our nation needs to realize “that the only realistic way to control gun violence is not by keeping guns out of the hands of as many Americans as possible, but keeping them out of the hands of people we all agree do not need them” (Whitney, p. 25). Some think the new, stricter restrictions when first buying guns will help. Things such as requiring more in depth background checks, making proper training courses mandatory, and professional psychological analysis before being sold a gun have all been suggested. Before purchasing a gun, you would have to have these criteria met before any company could sell you any kind of firearm or weapon (Black,
p.1-2).
Gun control is a national controversy that cannot be ignored. However, many think a decision pertaining to national gun control may never be seen (Pollit, p.8). Who knows what will come of this issue as it is debated more and more this year and, more than likely, many, many more years to come.
