The concept of Diversity and obtaining its 'true' understanding continues to shape and reshape organizational culture globally. Article written by R. Roosevelt Thomas on Redefining Diversity, broadens the general knowledge of diversity within the workplace and our everyday lives. In fact, in the early 1990s studies were done to determine the meaning of diversity. For example, in 1997 the National Naval Research Council defined diversity as the presence of a significant number of women, members of underrepresented racial groups, and persons with disabilities throughout the organization (National Research Council Staff. Diversity is a necessary business aspect needed for any company to succeed. In a global marketplace, a company that employs a diverse workforce, both men and women, people of many generations, people from ethnically and racially diverse backgrounds, etc. is better able to understand the demographics of the marketplace it serves and better equipped to thrive in that marketplace than a company that has a more limited range of employee demographics. Susan Jackson states in Diversity in the Workplace: Human Resource Initiatives that, “Surveys of business leaders confirm the perception that interest in managing diversity successfully is widespread. In my opinion living in a diverse society, along with understanding and knowledge is a positive route to acceptance on a variety of levels. When looking at my own life values and experiences I feel that as a person I don’t have prejudices and discrimination, however dependant on circumstances and peers I may on occasion say something deemed to be a prejudice.
