Reading Noah’s story from an ENT specialist point of view, there were a lot of communication barriers that could be avoided to prevent this tragedy from happening. I did notice that four of the sub-competencies of the Core Competencies for Interprofessional collaboration practice were not strictly adhered to on the part of the ENT specialist. It is hard to continue to communicate with others at times when you have a difference of opinion. In order to limit these challenges faced, you should encourage the team to share their ideas and brain storm together. Communication should always be clear about your ideas, plans and thoughts to help alleviate any questions or concerns. When building a collaborative team, it is important to balance the group so it is large enough to explore options however it needs to be small enough that a relationship can be built. However, the size of the groups can determine the amount of communication amongst them. When there are many people involved in a group that are discussing one subject, there is much more chance to misunderstandings. Too little can cause things to be missed or misinterpreted. Too much communication can cause the objective to be over explained, and cause stress because you are constantly hearing about the issues that you and your team are currently working on. Positive communication will provide quicker results that are needed as well as everyone will feel a sense of triumph. Collaboration in a sense is compromise and to be able to know compromise, you will be able to become part of the team. This allowed for a proper discharge and to be able to go home or preferred place of living and continue with the life she was accustomed to as well as the best quality. With collaboration we all share the same interest and will have a better patient outcome. We in this case were able to work together and come to a positive solution and plan of care for the patient even with the staff shortage and all the teaching and encouragement that was needed for this specific…

Currently I am a senior level 4 nursing student. With being a nursing student it requires many communication skills verbal and non-verbal. Various classes in the communication curriculum would be very beneficial to my major. For example, COMM 1018 interpersonal communication would be very helpful because with this class I would learn communication skills such as; looking for detailed feelings and face-to-face non-verbal and verbal cues. Having the knowledge that I have now if I would have taking communication classes earlier I may have had a better experience understanding the signs of pain that patients gave me without actually telling me.…
