Often times you see athletes performing dominating blocks, making big hits, or making acrobatic catches. However, athletes have much more to offer off their respective playing surfaces that goes unseen. Here at Henderson State University athletes are supposed to epitomize what a college student in Arkadelphia should be. We’re depended upon to be campus leaders to our peers and set examples verbally as well as through our actions. Sometimes we’re seen as intimidating individuals do to our outer appearance but we’re empathetic to others just as others. Our athletic program is set on allowing our athletes to give back to our community and school through participation in various events that occur throughout the calendar year. By providing opportunities for student-athletes to serve, these young men and women make meaningful contributions to society. Teams as well as individual student-athletes are involved in numerous charity and community organizations, schools and hospitals. Some student-athletes have also created, initiated and implemented service projects/activities. One specific event, Reddie to Serve, allows us just this amble opportunity to show our gratitude and appreciation back to the citizens of…

Lee complained about college costs, and how much of it was being spent on a “pleasure ride” (par. 6). Upon observing any college site, one can find statistics on the percent of students using financial aid. Ave Maria University is known as a prestigious institution of learning. Each and every young adult has the right to learn. This brings me back to the times when I was given the opportunity and pleasure to mentor grade school students in the sport of baseball. I took this opportunity to not only teach them the fundamentals of the sport, but I was also blessed with learning compassion and patience from these young enthusiastic learners. This opened a door for me to go on to mentoring underprivileged students at the University of Illinois at Chicago campus. This touched me so much that it would be an honor while attending Ave Maria University, to get involved in mentoring and volunteer work on campus and within the community. My academic career choice is aimed at giving back. It would be a privilege to study here, especially for students like myself, whose careers may take them anywhere. A degree with your institution is sure to open doors and opportunities for me, regardless of where I am.…

It was not until, the end of my Sophomore year when I joined Sallisaw Youth Coalition(SYC), that I realized that this small town has plenty to offer its citizens. It may not offer malls or luxurious restaurants but it offers all that it can manage for its residents. From the moment I affiliated with SYC, I became involved with activities in my community that I didn't even know existed. The more active I became with SYC the more my perception of the town changed. I began to see the town as a supportive friendly environment. If I accomplished anything from growing up in a small town it's learning that you truly can't judge a book by its' cover. This town may appear horrible and hopeless but the heart of this town is its warm generous people who care to improve it. Many of the warm generous people are the teachers that want to witness their students succeed in life. I dedicate my academic success to my wonderful instructors. My exceptional teachers taught me that if you apply yourself to the difficulties at hand you will develop skills that will advance your knowledge in the future. This advice is kept close to my heart and serves as a support when tasks seem challenging. My ambitions for becoming a script/screenwriter are usually diminished or frowned upon…

Growing up, Jason was always the smartest kid in class. He was beating games at age five and had an eloquent vocabulary. At a young age my parents could see that he was a genius; my mom always joked how it was all the Chinese food she ate while she was pregnant with him. After finishing seventh grade, he attended SMU's talented and gifted program, also known as TAG. This was a summer program where you live in a dorm, go to classes, and earn college credits at a young age. He continued this summer program every year until he graduated high school. After applying to multiple colleges, two schools he had dreamed of going to contacted him and let him know that he had received a fully paid scholarship. These schools were SMU and Yale University. He had to decide if he wanted to stay close to family or move thousands of miles away to Connecticut where he'd never been before.…
