Author: Jay Ashner, Amount of pages: 288. This young-adult fiction novel describes a boy, Clay Jensen, receiving a box of tapes. On these tapes Hannah baker, a girl who recently committed suicide, explains why she killed herself. Clay hears all the stories and all the people who caused her death, he also has a story but not one you may think.
Clay Jensen receives a shoe box that has seven tapes inside, on the first tape is an explanation of why Hannah made the tapes. She explained how there are thirteen people on these tapes, including Clay, who impacted her decision to commit suicide. If someone decides not to send the tapes to the next person then an anonymous person will send the tapes out into the public.

On this list there were category's like the worst and best butt, or the worst or best face. Hannah, unfortunately, made it onto this list as best butt, the boys were messing around but Hannah didn't see it that way. This list ruined on of Hannah's friendship with Jessica, her and Hannah were compared against each other and Jessica got mad at her. Jessica slapped Hannah leaving a scar on her forehead, a mental reminder of the friendship that ended. After Hannah thought nothing can get worse it did, she discovered she had a peeping tom taking pictures of her in her room. She found this out because every so often she would hear camera clicks while she was moving in her room. She told a friend, Courteney, about what has been happening. They had a plan to catch this sick guy in the act. Courtney went over to Hannah's house and they gave each other sensual massages to excite whomever is out there. As soon as they heard the clicks they got a little more sexual. Courts walked over to Hannah's drawer and opened it as she did Hannah ran to the window and opens the curtains. Courtney had a reputation of everyone liking her and she wanted Hannah to like her too. Courtney ask Hannah to go to a party with her but only wanted a ride, when they got to the part she ditched Hannah. To make things worse at school a boy, Marcus, ask Hannah on a date after being paired together at Valentine's Day fundraiser. Hannah agreed and went to the local diner, she waited there for hours. When he did show up he said he thought it was a joke but came back to make sure Hannah knew that. They sat down and ordered milkshakes and after a while Marcus started to touch her inappropriately. After she finally pushed him away he called her a tease and walked out leaving Hannah there. Clay's story was just about how he was the only one who actually cared, Hannah pushed him away not wanting to get hurt again but he really cared about her. Hannah didn't think he belonged with all the others but he was still an important part of the story. One of the worst things that happened to Hannah wasn't something said or done to her, it was something she witnessed. A girl, a friend, was drugged by a guys at a party, he brought her into a bedroom and started to sell her out to guys. One guy after another as she sat in the closet unable to move or speak.
