The leadership influences for me started on the first Monday morning quarters onboard the CGC Yocona. I was right out of recruit training, firing on all cylinders and ready to tow the Coast Guard line. Quarters was held on the mess deck and the young BM3 was handing out work lists for the day. I did not know who he was but I watched and listened to everyone call him by his first name. Once orders were given out to all parties he then asked if there were any questions. I have been an assistant teacher, Vacation Bible School leader, and Acolyte leader. These positions have included teaching a small group of children from the age of three to ten about Jesus and being an altar helper or Acolyte. I have learned compassion working with these children that you cannot get anywhere else. Also at my church, I have gone on four mission trips. On these trips, I have done everything from making beds at a homeless shelter to setting up a firework tent during a thunderstorm. My favorite opportunity to be a leader is at LDS girl’s camp as a YCL. For a whole week, I had the opportunity to serve the girls I was in charge of.
