Does the ophthalmic industry need regulation?
Discuss the reasons for regulation in the ophthalmic industry
Most times rules and regulation that are found in ophthalmic industry are essential in order to keep up compliance with the law. When rules are breach, one could be liable if their employees contacts the authorities.
Safety
One significant factor for abiding to the industry rules and regulation is for safety reason, safety for co-worker and patient. This is vital when working with machinery that could cause injury or working in a hazardous settings. The General Optical Council (GOC) is the legislative body which regulates dispensing opticians and optometrists and bodies corporate carrying on business as optometrists or dispensing opticians. The GOC's main aims are to protect the public and promote high standards of professional conduct and education amongst opticians. The GOC sets standards so that every registered practitioner knows what is expected of them. They take action against opticians who do not meet these standards of professional conduct and also against people or companies who break the terms of the Opticians Act. In order to work as (dispensing) opticians or optometrists in the UK, individuals must demonstrate to the GOC that they are suitably qualified and fit to practise. The GOC also maintains a register of companies who carry on business as opticians.

What are the standards of practice, are these the same for all professionals in the Ophthalmic industries?
The GOC has put nineteen standards in place which optometrist and dispensing optician in the UK must obey.
