Ophthalmologist Personal Statement
Every decision I make is to fulfil passion, contribute positively to my community, and better my life. After graduating from a Nigerian university in 2007 with a degree in Doctor of Optometry (O.D), I had plans to continue to medical school so as to pursue my passion as an ophthalmologist after being qualified as a medical doctor. However, I decided to take time off and start a family. This decision wasn’t an easy one since I knew it meant putting my aspirations on hold. In any case, I knew that one day I was going to go back to school. My passion to become an ophthalmologist developed while I was a little child. I grew up to see a blind grandfather. My mother explained to me based on the questions I asked about my grandpa’s condition …show more content…
I got exposed to methods and clinical medical practices. Due to experiences in life, some things that come my way, I don’t take as mere coincidence. One incidence I will not be fast to forget because I see it as a confirmation to my passion was the day I was the only one on duty. On this very day, a patient walked into our clinic with pains and in desperate need of help. On examining this patient, I discovered that this patient had a corneal laceration. Immediately, I felt goose pimples all over me because I knew that is something that is beyond my scope of training as an optometrist. I felt empty, with a deep sense of emotional dissatisfaction of wanting to help but lacking the knowledge and capability to help. I tried all I could to reach out to the ophthalmologist, but to no avail. So, with my knowledge and training on the management of minor ocular injuries, I applied an antimicrobial cream to the lacerated eye. Afterwards, I patched the eye and scheduled the patient to see the ophthalmologist the following day. That day, on leaving the hospital, I remembered grandfather’s situation and that quickly drew me back to my passion. Though, a very unpleasant scenario, however, I believe my experience with this very patient confirmed my belief that in future, I would be a doctor who eventually will specialize in …show more content…
The truth is, I have come to realize that there is never going to be a perfect time. I have accomplished everything I set out to accomplish back in 2007. Having been out of school for so long, I reasonably knew that going back to school for a medical program would not be a piece of cake. On relocating to the USA, I decided to re-freshen my knowledge of basic science. So, I enrolled in a reputable community college. I am also proud to report that my grades are significantly better than they were years back as you can see for yourselves when you compare both transcripts. This is a reflection of how hard I am willing to work for something I

So I decided my next school year I would prove to myself exactly how much I could accomplish. So this past school year I have reached my goal of having straight A’s every quarter in every class meanwhile, working around twenty hours every weekend, while having school nights completely dedicated to school. This current school year I am a senior at my high school but going full-time to community college instead, meanwhile still working at Panera Bread for thirty to thirty-five hours a week. I am exceedingly proud of myself for being able to accomplish this task, each of these school years. I have proven to myself I can accomplish anything I set my mind to with hard work and dedication.…

The journey to medical school has by no means been an effortless one. Choosing the non-traditional route to complete my studies has not only equipped me with the maturity necessary to excel in medical school, but also the knowledge required to overcome the challenges I may encounter during my journey. Upon completing my undergraduate studies at FSU, I subsequently went on to complete additional post baccalaureate science courses at both Miami Dade College and Florida International University. Also, I have recently completed my Masters degree in Biomedical Science at Barry University. During my undergraduate and graduate years, I maintained full time employment, which has taught me the art of time management; a trait I believe will be essential to my success while in…

There are two instances in my life that has inspired me to gain interest in medicine. My grandmother when I was around the age of twelve received double bypass surgery and I fell in love with the physician who took care of her. The physician was a middle aged woman who was one of the kindest person I have ever met, and she gave us the news of how everything went fine during surgery. She also gave us great confidence in how my grandmother would return to normal soon. The look on my parents and aunts face when she gave the news gave me goosebumps and to this day I feel the same goosebumps when I think about this. I just wanted to one day be in a position to deliver good news to a family and to see that “look” of relief on their faces. Another…

Although, my educational interest is the catalyst for my pursuit of becoming a doctor; my motivation emanated from more than just wanting to learn how to assess and treat many different conditions. August 31, 2015 is a day I will never forget. My grandmother called and informed me that my mother had just gotten into a car accident. She told me that the car flipped about four times, immediately there was a multitude of thoughts and emotions running through my mind. Family members would often call me with questions regarding their health. During my Internship as part of medical school, a 50-year-old presented to the clinic with numbness of his legs. His initial lab works showed increased blood sugar levels and increased hba1c levels and after doing an EKG I was able to confirm that he had suffered from a silent Myocardial Infarction. He was later started on appropriate treatment and when I met him later for outpatient follow-up, the whole family reported to be indebted to me for diagnosing a hidden problem. This really overwhelmed me and made me realize the kind of satisfaction I was able to provide a family by being an Internist. This also proved me that I had the thought process to untie the complexity involved and come up with a broad differential diagnosis. Taking up challenges is one of my attributes and I feel an Internist faces unique Intellectual challenges on a daily basis. From my experience, I can say that even a small change in someone’s life will make a difference, like when I was talking to my Aunt who is a diabetic, was complaining of muscle pain and after diagnosing her condition as medication-induced, I witnessed how peaceful she was after eliminating the…

Coming from a remote village in India where access to medical care is limited, I have had the dream of becoming a physician since I was very young. But, being a curious individual, growing up I became fascinated toward other career paths in my childhood as well. For example, I wanted to become a pilot when I was in second grade, and wanted to become a professional volleyball player when I was in fifth grade. I am glad that I spent enough time in researching those career paths that I had absolutely no hesitation or distraction when I started pursuing my career in medicine. Today, I can say that pediatrics is my only career interest.…

I entered school in August of 2009 and did not focus on my studies. After just one year my GPA was a 1.376, because I did not have the drive that I had in high school to succeed. After a couple of years away from Texas Christian University, while attending a 2-year college, I realized what I wanted to do with my life, sparking the motivation I had been searching for. I then decided to return to TCU and fix my awful GPA, which I managed to do with hard work, determination, and appropriate priorities. After one year of nonstop studying and focus, I have managed to raise my GPA to a 2.777, removing myself from academic probation and qualifying for opportunities I was not eligible before. This was difficult for me because I also work part-time…

When I was in secondary school, my dad was diagnosed with oral cancer. It was a tough time for our family, but we were not alone. The oral surgeons were always by our side, consistently providing hope and reassurance throughout the treatment when we needed it the most. During this period, I witnessed their talents, passion, and professionalism in finding the best treatments for my father. Thanks to their efforts, my father was able to fully recover. This was the point when I realized that dentistry was the career that I wanted to pursue. With my love of science and motivation to help people in the same way that my father's oral surgeons had left an impact on my family, I desired to be a dentist.…

Everything in my life began to change, from my friends to my attitude. My future was looking bright. The only thing left was to pick a profession, something that would ignite my spark. That was when my parents were involved in a terrible accident. In March 2009, my parents were pedestrians struck by a car. My mother was diagnosed with a fractured tibial plateau, and was wheelchair bound for five months. During this difficult time I accompanied her to numerous appointments and met many different medical personnel. Surprisingly, I became inspired. It was an awful time for my family, but it was an experience that changed my life. Everything about the healthcare system fascinated me. I asked many questions about medications, imaging techniques that were used on my mother, and job descriptions of practically everyone I had encountered. I remember telling a nurse about how I found the hospital to be the most interesting place that I have ever visited and she replied, “Well if you feel that way, you should become a doctor, they practically live…

My passion for pursuing a career as a Rheumatologist. I decided that I wanted to be a Rheumatologist when I was a freshman in high school. It wasn’t because it’s a career not many would choose, so most likely there will be an open position for it, it was because of a traumatic event that occurred during my freshman year. 3 weeks before taking my finals for the first time in high school I developed knee pain. It was excruciating pain, for people, it took them 10 seconds to go down the stairs, while for me, it took 5 minutes. If I had to bend my knee, I would cry because I could not bear the pain. After 3 weeks of enduring unbearable pain, I went to the hospital and the doctors did surgery to flush out inflammation in my knee and later came to…
