My passion for becoming a paediatric nurse began when I fell sick and was admitted to a childrens ward in a hospital at the age of 14. During this time, observing how nurses treat patients allowed me to decide that it was the perfect job for me. My keen interest in nursing and working in the health sector soared when I decided to take Health and Social Care in Sixth Form, entering the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma qualification, which allows me to take the course at university. The course is made up of many different units which are all linked to the understanding of health and social care. My favourite unit is “Human Lifespan Development” because it includes the understanding of growth and development in infants and children, which I am particularly interested in. Throughout my time at the nursery, I was able to identify the skills, such as communication and organisation skills, and personal qualities such as empathy, that someone would need when working with children. I also shadowed the nursery nurse for a while, gaining knowledge about the type of tasks I would be undertaking in the future. As part of my Level 3 course, I experienced working in a nursing home for the elderly every Friday. I believe that my personal skills and attributes have developed so much after undertaking this work experience, and that this experience allowed me to have a feel of what it is like to work in the health sector.
