What do most people think of when the words “fast food” come to mind? The first thing that pops into a person’s brain are restaurants such as McDonald’s, Wendy’s, and so on. All of those places sell foods that are high in calories, sodium, fat, and sugar. When the restaurant Panera is mentioned, people usually think about how they have healthy food options and would never be considered a fast food restaurant. Panera Bread, is a popular American bakery and café chain. It is known for its bakery products, sandwiches, salads, soups, and pastas. Louis Bread was started in 1987 in Kirkwood, Missouri. Six years later Au Bon Pain Co. bought the company and changed the name to Panera Bread. They changed the name to because in Latin the word Panera means, “breadbasket.” In May of 1999, to expand Panera Bread into a national restaurant, Au Bon Pain Co. sold its other chains, which is now owned by Compass Group North America. Panera portrays themselves as a "bakery-café.” The atmosphere of the restaurant is enjoyable, but it depends what time of the day it is. In the morning they are busy due to people stopping on their way to work to get something for breakfast and the same goes for lunchtime. Last year, Business Insider tested out which restaurant was better. Panera has over, 1,800 locations while Au Bon Pain has only 268 locations. They both serve similar food options and the way both restaurants are set up are extremely similar. The both serve a chicken Panini that has the same ingredients after the sandwiches were taste tested the conclusion was Panera’s had more flavor and was fresher than Au Bon Pain. Other items on the menu that were tested were the soups, macaroni and cheese, and other sandwiches. Panera was proven to be the winner after every meal. There is a reason why Panera is more well-known while Au Bon Pain has less than 300
