I learnt the concepts of Engineering materials and metallurgy in order to improve the machinability reduce the formation of burrs and to improve its wear resistance. I studied carburisation of the case hardened steel. Controlling time of carbon diffusion into the austenitic steel and maintaining the carbon content to 0.25% was a major concern since an important microstructure goal during carburisation is a stable, uniformly fine-grained austenite. This resulted in improved fatigue resistance and toughness after heat treatment which improved the quality of the produced gears. The performance factor was improved by reducing the downtime of bottleneck operation (Gear tooth cutting) by working out a design of the chuck for the workpiece that yielded in single minute exchange of dies (SMED). The availability factor was improved by proposing a change in the plant layout of the Crown gear machining line that substantially reduced the walking distance. All these factors put together, improved the manufacturing productivity by a significant number. The project was well received by the company and by the management of my …show more content…
I believe that pursuing my master’s at Purdue University will be a logical extension of my objectives. Among their pioneering research work in the field of design and manufacturing, it is the applied research in the Advanced Engineering and Manufacturing Laboratory that provides the right fit to my futuristic endeavours. While the investigation of Optimal powertrain design, control and performance testing blends well with a part of my sophomore year project, other laboratories including Multibody Dynamics Lab provide a smooth transition into research in developing computationally efficient automotive components while also improving their safety, stability and their efficiency, which is a part of the entire range of thinking I would like to associate myself with. Exposure to such state of the art laboratory facilities will provide me with the perfect platform for a strong basis for advanced professional practice but also apply what I have learnt and assimilate more in this
