At 12:45 p.m. on March 24, Hartley paced back and forth in front of room 221 of the UCF Student Union as she prepared for her 40-minute long lecture that would discuss techniques and resources to help students avoid procrastination.
She began her presentation by asking the seven students in attendance to introduce themselves in an ice-breaker exercise. She then discussed the programs SARC has to offer.
“Academic assistance is the bulk of what we offer through supplemental instruction and peer tutoring,” Hartley said. “We also offer learning assistance through learning skills consultations …show more content…
Do you deceive yourself into believing that a mediocre performance, or lesser standards are acceptable? These are some of the questions we have put together just for you to keep in mind.”
SARC has three locations around UCF’s campus, including in Howard Phillips Hall, the College of Engineering and Computer Science and the Veteran’s Academic Resource Center. All of its programs are free to students who find themselves fitting Hartley's description.
Hartley listed lack of motivation as the top reason people procrastinate.
“One of the reasons for procrastination could be that you don’t feel like doing it,” Hartley said. “But is that a smart thing? No, we cannot put off doing things because we don’t want to.”
She highlighted some of the results procrastination can have on the psyche of students.
“Procrastination can lead to an increased feeling of stress and being overwhelmed.” Hartley said. “In fact, procrastination can even lead to further procrastination, in which case you’re really not going to want to accomplish that
