Safety And Freedom By H. L. Mencken
Society needs certain key parts to ensure that humanity doesn’t fall. This includes safety and freedom. Some people, like writer H.L. Mencken, believe that safety should be our priority, not freedom, “The average man does not want to be free. He simply wants to be safe.” Certain freedoms need to be surrendered to ensure our safety. The freedom to wear a seatbelt is one example of this. Seat belts can help protect a person in car crashes, and if a police officer catches them without one on, there’s a fine. It should be their choice, however, if they want to wear one. There’s more of a chance of getting hurt, but freedom comes with a price. Freedom, to some, is more important. We don’t want the government honing in on our phone calls, since that’s a major invasion of privacy. Lots of us would rather chose safety over freedom, but in some cases freedom is vital. Giving up some of our freedoms can be rewarded with safety. The government is allowed to monitor us on what we do on our computers and cell phones. This is allowed due to the Patriot Act. This Act was made into a law after the 9/11 attacks. The …show more content…
Possibly because it parallels are internal struggles of self preservation, or the risk of discovery. From H.L. Mencken, the average man would rather have safety over freedom. This could be true simply because safety is not given and can be taken away. It’s not promised and can be considered a big privilege. Safety allows for our survival, and to not unleash chaos in a society. We’ve learned throughout history that human beings were sometimes put at harm, and in return we must give up some of our freedoms to be safe. Safety is more sought out, but in some cases freedom rules over it. Freedom let’s us feel like we have control of our lives, and is pursued. In some instances, I would rather have my freedom than safety. Most want safety, but those who would rather have freedom, allow our race to

The main argument government officials make is that Americans need to sacrifice their privacy so that the FBI and NSA are able to effectively protect them from terrorist attacks. The NSA has records of every single phone conversation ever had. This is a complete violation of all Americans privacy. The White House has even said that The Patriot Act has not caught or helped catch any terrorist that wouldn't have otherwise been caught. Government officials just want to be able to have something to back…

However, I am very well aware that there is a chance that I could, unknowingly, sacrifice a liberty without fully realizing it. I always liked to believe that I am the type of person who won’t willingly conform to something, but I will never really know if this is truly the case. As Siegfried observed in the early 1900s, American citizens were throwing away their personal liberties because society stated that one thing—the standard of living—was sacred above all else. While this wasn’t necessarily true, many of Americans blindly accepted this “fact” and did whatever they could to obtain a position where they were deemed successful by society. This goes to show that people can and do sacrifice liberties without consciously realizing it, which is common in conformity.…

I do not agree with Benjamin Franklin, in many situations, it is favorable to give up public liberties so that we may ensure public safety. Such is often the case in airports, schools, federal buildings and various other locations. Additionally, while the constitution means to secure America’s liberties as well as insuring its domestic tranquility, it has been shown in several situations that this can not always be upheld.…

H.L Mencken, American essayist and social critic, wrote “The average man does not want freedom he simply wants to be safe.” Many people would like to argue this statement saying that we as Americans have fought century’s to gain freedom so why would we sacrifice it for anything. Despite this argument, the average man in today’s society is indeed willing to sacrifice freedoms for safety due to the fact that mankind is programmed for survival, aware of freedoms being pushed too far, and able to distinguish and sacrifice dangerous things.…

“The average man does not want to be free. He simply wants to be safe.” H.L. Mencken. Over time in society the rights people in America have to be free has become overthrown by the idea of being safe. In today's society due to police brutality, hiding your identity, and prejudice the people have to worry more about being safe than their right to be free. The difference between safety and freedom is one that is subjective to a person’s perception of the two things. Some might say that safety lies in the freedom to decide and execute one’s actions themselves, while others might say that freedom is the barrier standing in front of safety. “The average man does not want to be free. He simply wants to be safe,” is a quote by H. L. Mencken that describes one extreme end of the spectrum. However, this observation is only partially applicable regarding contemporary society.…

In our society today, many people want to be safe and secure. This is understandable, being that there have been many terrorist attacks, shootings, bombings, and much more. But is safety and security a good reason to sacrifice freedom? Napoleons society seemed to be dealing with the same question – security or freedom? They believed that as long as they were safe, they wouldn’t mind what the government did. It seems to be that same way in America today. As long as the government keeps us safe, we don’t mind what they do. But is that really freedom? Or are we saying we are willing to give up our freedom for safety? I’m not sure, and neither was Napoleons society.…
