What skills, education, training is required in this position?
Melissa told me about her education. Her first year emphasized social welfare policy and services, human behavior in the social environment, social work research, diversity in a multicultural environment, human development in psychopathology, emphasis on how its shaped by the environment. It requires a Master’s degree, license in social work, LCSW, LCP, or a PhD in clinical psychology. It also requires 5 years of experience, supervisory experience is preferred, and experience in a residential treatment program. Training when hired is required. There is also county training and required training for community services board human rights, child abuse prevention, adult protective services, child protective, suicide prevention, medication administration, communicable disease prevention, bloodborne pathogens. She told me the most rewarding part of her work was assisting individuals to improve their capacity and ability to lead more fulfilling lives in the community. A close second is assisting new clinicians to develop confidence in their skills.

The most challenging part of her job is lack of resources, particularly housing and healthcare and community support for individuals with significant mental health symptoms. Another difficulty is that documentation requirements have increased substantially over the past few years.

“yes, we’re part of a large integrated behavioral health system, we’re able to track client ability and progress over time. When clients are doing well they frequently stay in contact after leaving or we get that info through outcome surveys. When they’re not doing well we are able to offer them readmission stabilization services and continued support”
