Statement Of Purpose In Transportation Engineering
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
“A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.”

These inspiring words of Albert Einstein have been a driving force, urging me to take risks by trying new things. As a small kid, when I got a building blocks set for my birthday, I would rather try to make it into innovative shapes of different sizes. Those were the moments which led me to my first love - Science. As my bag pack kept getting heavier, my quest for the physical sciences loaded as well. My Dad being from an Engineering background he backed me to chivvy my chimera. Sketching funky cartoons was always my avocation which led me to actively take part in bountiful artistic events. Coming to the outdoor part of leisure, badminton and cricket were my area of expertise. Being a scout gave me an extra edge and prepped me for extreme possibilities. Camp time trained me in perfecting various kinds of knots, building tents, trestle, and bridges. It also bestowed me the finest quality one can ever have – discipline. The first day in college, I went about visiting my department and wow! I wondered at the excellence of the workshops and the facilities that I saw. Adding to my pleasure was the fact that my syllabus was completely tailor made, the way I wanted it to be. At Prince Shri Venkateshwara Padmavathy Engineering College, India, one of the top 50 engineering colleges in the country as well as one of the top 5 colleges in the state, I benefited from the breadth of Anna University syllabus which gave me a comprehensive exposure to the core areas of Civil Engineering such as Structural Analysis, Design of Reinforced Concrete Elements, Design of Steel Structures, Surveying, HIGHWAY ENGINEERING, RAILWAYS AIRPORTS AND HARBOUR ENGINEERING etc., The syllabus made way for me to streamline my thoughts and helped me look deeper into Transportation Engineering. These, incidentally, are the major fields that are involved with the Transportation and Highways, my child hood fascination. My thirst has not stopped with

The Arts have called my name for as long as I can remember. As a child, I dabbled in any intensively creative and performative thing that was in the immediate vicinity. I would go around telling all my peers that when I grew up, I was going to have any one of a number of extravagant careers: I would promise to become a famous actress on Monday, declare myself a world-class musician on Wednesday and swear to grow to be a best-selling novelist by Friday. The Arts, and all they encompassed, were my first love. It only seemed natural to me, like eating or blinking, that my life should be dedicated to the very thing that made me the happiest. I finally took my ambitions to heart my first year of high school, where I eagerly sought out beginning…

I had always been a good child. No matter how much work I had, I did it. Even if I had two hours of homework, you could count on me to help you. Now that I am an adult, I realize what a wonderful childhood I had. I went to a great private school with the best teachers and students. I even had the privilege of having my very own textbooks. Those who weren’t as lucky, had textbooks destroyed by students who had them before they were even born. It might seem like all I cared about was school, but I loved to have fun. I played with my friends all weekend. My favorite activities to play outside were cricket and badminton. I wasn’t that great at cricket, but I was a formidable badminton opponent. In fact, I was so good that my friends refused to play me for fear of losing 21 to 0. When it was too hot during the summer, or too rainy during the monsoon season, my friends and I played card games. I enjoyed playing an Indian card game called “fish”, in which he goal is to get cards in a certain order. Both of my parents worked in offices, so I always got presents on holidays and my birthdays.…

Though suffering from my inferiority, I have discovered the strength to enter the world of engineering. Tools and machines will never disappoint—when one puts a quarter-inch wrench on a quarter—inch bolt, it works. I don’t have to be the smartest or the prettiest to gain other’s recognition, and I don’t need to please anyone in the engineering world. As long as I understand the mechanics, I can accomplish anything if I try hard enough - the efforts I put it will always become the outcome I wished…

As plainly as I can put it, I am a artist. The myriad of ideas and possibilities gained through art has been ingrained in me since I was a child. One of my first memories is at my grandparents house, It was a saturday morning and they had sat me in front of the television to watch cartoons on PBS. I sat there and watched the usual children shows until they were over and PBS switched to the adult shows. However, that day my attention was beakon back to the screen by a smooth calm voice, and my eyes focus on the afroed painter Bob Ross. It was from that moment I became completely infatuated with art, I would sit and watch him paint for hours and just imagine my 5 year old self being able to create these fantastical, beautiful scene with the stroke of a paint brush. I had always shown advanced art skills from the beginning, surpassing other children my age. For me, it was something I had always done, I was born with a pencil in my hand. But, it was in those hours of watching Bob Ross that…

My pursuit of physical therapy as a profession comes from my interest in healing the human body. Originally inspired by my grandfather, it has been my profession of choice for as long as i can remember; From a young child observing my grandfather unable to be mobile without the use of a cane, to my teenage years when I learned about the dynamics of the human body, to even more recently, after the excision of an osteochondroma on my femur during my time spent in the care of a physical therapist. <---RUN ON SENTENCE, ADJUST IT These humbling experiences have helped solidify my passion for physical therapy.…

My time here at South Brunswick High School has been a time for self-exploration. I spent my first two years at SBHS trying to find out who I was as a person and what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Ever since I was young, I yearned for the opportunity to help not only humanity but the world as well. My whole family is full of engineers, so since a young age I despised them. I saw the path of engineering as a beaten path that simply wasn’t for me; I sought to be unique. However, I failed to realize that engineers were the people building towards the future. Engineering is the one profession that captures risk, innovation, and courage in one lifestyle. One very influential person taught…

“Engineering is not merely knowing and being knowledgeable, like a walking encyclopaedia; engineering is not merely analysis; engineering is not merely the possession of the capacity to get elegant solutions to non-existent engineering problems; engineering is practicing the art of the organised forcing of technological change… Engineers operate at the interface of science and society.” - Dean Gordon Brown. Prior to starting secondary school at Spotswood College at the age of 13, I had little knowledge of the vast opportunities that the field of science offers, nor did I realise how intriguing and exciting science can be. It was in my first year at high school that was introduced to general science, a subject which I would continue to study for three years. I found that the areas within the science curriculum that I enjoyed the most were practical, real-life situations that were relevant to the real world, not just the world within the school laboratory. The process of applying scientific methods to solve real-life problems continued to interest and intrigue me throughout my years of studying general science, and I soon realised that science was the field that I wanted a career in. This idea hasn’t changed. In my second year of high school at Spotswood College, I was offered the chance to take part in an extension program in Chemistry before school three times a week, as well as continuing with general science as a subject. Throughout this year, I was continually amazed at the many different fields that chemistry, and also science as a whole, is composed of, yet once again it was the real-life, real-world applications that interested me. It was at this time that I started researching engineering as a career option. By the time I reached Year 12, I had to decide which fields of science I wanted to continue studying in. Throughout my previous years at high school I had found that it was the fields of…

Before, the connotation that peace and diplomatic affairs should only be handled by world leaders and diplomats are very strong. However, as I was studying the different nursing and health concepts during my university years, realization dawned on me that health care professionals can also play a major part in peace-making, peacekeeping and peace building efforts. This belief was strengthened when I read “Peace through Health” by Arya and Santa Barbara. Given extensive and intensive training in diplomacy, mediation and conflict resolution, health workers can have unique opportunities for diplomatic work. Furthermore, I believe health care workers doing peace work can break barriers since the subject of health itself transcends individual goals even between parties divided by violence. Health according to WHO is one of the key components of human security which we all want to achieve. An adequate and equitable health care system gives humans security and this actually encourages peace. In my country, a long standing conflict between the government and rebels have caused so much mortalities and morbidities and not all are direct effects of violence. I wish to channel my efforts on lessening the peace deficits on these troubled parts of my country by leading them through health programs.…

The passion towards Civil engineering did elicit from the fact that my native village was neglected from daily life facilities like, roads, bridges, water supply, railways, hospitals etc I did realize their values in my student life and consequently , I utterly infatuated with this profession. Therefore, I did Civil engineering from University of Engineering and Technology Lahore (Pakistan) which is famous for its Department of Civil engineering; the education I received from my teachers is at once comprehensive and in-depth, encompassing all the important field of Civil engineering. Apart from core courses as construction of Buildings, Barrages, Dams, Bridges, Water Supply etc I have been very interested in courses relating to management and planning like Infrastructure planning and management. This is not only because they are indispensable to Civil engineering but also because they contain the kind of erudition and cogent logic that simply fascinated me. Furthermore, I realized the mastery of such course will boost-up my knowledge and will prepare me to examine and troubleshoot the Infrastructure related problems of my own country.…
