I observed a child throwing a fit at the mall the other day. This child did not want to leave the store and did not want to get into her stroller. She started to throw her head back and scream very loudly. Then she would throw her arms around and kick, in an attempt to not be strapped in. The mother started to yell at her daughter to stop while trying to strap her in. After a few minutes of the child kicking and screaming she was able to strap her in. But the child continued to scream, this was when the mother decided to leave the mall. My recommendation is that instead of trying to force the child into the stroller the parent could have held the child. Throughout reading Chapter 8, Perceiving Motion, I learned how we typically act in our daily lives. As humans, we are constantly acting, either dramatically such as riding a bike or routinely, as in reaching for a coffee cup or walking across the room. Whatever form of action takes, it involves motion, and one of the things that makes the study of motion perception fascinating and challenging is that we are not simply passive observers of the motion of others, we often move ourselves. Temperaments is the natural style of how children interact with others. There are three types of temperaments: flexible, fearful, and feisty. Each describe how children respond to the environment differently. Flexible children tend to be easygoing and playful. They have a normal development and adapt to new environments easily. Caregivers have to check in with them occasionally to ensure that they’re okay because some flexible long for attention as well. Fearful children are instantly attached to their caregivers. To advance physical and intellectual competence I provide various amounts of equipment and activities that help promote the physical development of children I do this by offering activities that will allow children to use their small muscles and large muscles. Children need these types of activities so they can become familiar about how to use their muscles and to develop body strength. Activities such as jumping, running, and balancing themselves will help them gain strength in lower parts of their bodies. These activities allow them to work with their gross motor skills. Activities such as painting, puzzles, writing, coloring allows them to use their fine motor skills. I try to encourage children to use their cognitive skills. I do this by having the children think about how to solve problems rather than simply asking question and receiving and answer. For example children asked “What happens if we bring a grasshopper into the classroom?” The children brought a grasshopper into classroom to see if it would hop around, make noise, move, or stay still. Then the children and I discussed why it moved or didn’t move. I keep activities interesting so that the children will want to learn and use their minds. In the classroom cognitive skills are used on a daily basis. I encourage children to be creative. When the present proposal was initially conceptualized the idea was to focus on how stand-biased desks with fidget bars might aid cognition in students with attention difficulties. However, how do you implement a long-term stand-biased desk use study of just children with attention difficulties in a school setting? How do you identify a large enough population without stigmatizing them? It was quickly realized that the way to do this is to do a long-term research project that would benefit all students. Entire schools will be randomized to either keep their traditional seated classrooms or have the stand-biased desks installed in all classrooms. All students in a particular grade with the stand-biased desks can choose to consent to participate in the research project. Analysis will focus on comparisons between traditional seated conditions and stand-biased desk condition within the whole consented population. Further analysis will focus on just one subgroup of differently abled children with respect to learning. Often times the student is shuffling in his seat, constantly moving to different positions in the chair. The student often fumbles with items in his desk. When I arrived, Athena was finishing her morning snack/breakfast. After a few minutes, she got up and stood in line to wash her hands. (gross motor skills) While waiting, she was standing very close to the other child in front of her. With the assistance of a teacher, Athena washed her hands and pulled out a paper towel from the dispenser. When she was done drying her hands, she walked over to an area with a lot of toys. She grabbed a stuffed animal. She then started crawling around the floor as she looked at the other toys. She found a pet carrier and proceeded to put the stuffed animal into the carrier. When she finished putting the stuffed animal in the carrier, she placed the carrier on a chair. She then looked around the toy area and walked to the center of the classroom. Athena stood in the center of the classroom for a few minutes. She looked at what the other children were doing. She returned to the chair where she had left her stuffed animal and picked up the carrier. With the carrier in hand, she walked to a table where other children were playing. Through my experience shadowing physical therapists I have been able to see the true beauty of rehabilitating the human body and easing pain through movement. I know these accomplishments can be explained through science, but the body’s amazing ability to heal, along with the intricacy of the brain and its communication with the rest of the body have always seemed miraculous to me. I say that movement is a “simple” act, but when you get down to the basic science, it is absolutely incredible to see how much effort and design goes into each ‘simple’ motion. It could be argued that movement can enable the human body to heal and to grow more than many other forms of treatment. Movement is something that can not only enable a person to fully enjoy all that life has to offer, but it can also enable them to be a more healthy and active player in their own life. As a physical therapist, I hope that I will be able to better the lives of those around me, even in small ways. In my work, I will strive to inspire those who are hopeless, and to cheer on those who are making progress. I want to be an encourager, an advocate, and most importantly, I want to instill confidence in my patients. Whether it be to relieve a patient of chronic pain, or rehabilitate someone back to walking or playing their favorite sport, each milestone can be seen as a huge accomplishment. The human experience is one in which we all share, and when one person reaches their potential, society as a whole is improved.
