Working at a psychiatric unit I came across a 23 year old male who suffered from major depression. He was admitted to the unit with suicidal ideation because of feelings of worthlessness and medication
noncompliance. As he was on a suicide watch I was assigned as a one to one to this patient. Our common interests for Lord of the rings and Assassins Creed helped establish a rapport. Using this connection I conducted deep conversations about life, celebrating the small victories, medication and setting daily achievable goals. I was really proud when he followed my suggestion of showering every morning and getting ready even if there are no plans for that day. A physician is a lifelong student and a teacher. To me, becoming an osteopathic physician is an honorable goal. Recognizing that becoming a physician takes an enormous commitment, I am confident that my perseverance, empathy, and strong work ethic will be used to serve others in the near future.
