The Friend Who Saved My Life
The Friend Who Saved My Life

It was a beautiful august day on a San Diego beach. The waves crashing, the sun shinning and Sam and I ready to go boogie boarding. We were so anxious because we had sat in a car for eight hours trying to get to San Diego. All we wanted to do was go swimming and get onto our new boogie boards that my mother had bought for the trip. But little did we know that that day would be a day that neither of us would ever forget. That day was the day my best friend Sam Hanivan helped saved my life on that beach in San Diego. As we get out of the car we are so excited because it means our journey had finally ended and we were at our destination. The beach was amazing with its soft warm sand and the waves crashing in, perfect weather for boogie boarding. We weren’t used to beaches with soft sand because we grew up in northern California and most of the beaches were very rocky. But we were ready to just run out into the water without anything other than our boogie boards, but, my mom wouldn’t let us until we put on some sun screen because me and Sam were very white. She didn’t want us to get badly burnt; little did we know that would be the least of our worries. But we obeyed her since she was the boss so we put our sunscreen on and got ready to get out into the wave.
Finally we were able to go out into the water with our boogie boards and not a care in the world because we were 10 years old and all we wanted to do was have fun. We would ride the waves in and swim back out only to keep doing the same thing. But Sam and I never separated he was always there by my side and I wouldn’t leave him. If we took breaks and went in for snacks we did it together. We were out there all day just having the time of our lives; nothing could ruin this amazing adventure until the day took a turn for the worst.
The weather was starting to get windy and the waves were getting very choppy. We were still really far out into the water and exhausted from being

It was a beautiful July day in 2014 when my family and I were camping at Holland Lake with our family friends Kinsey and Lauren. There wasn't a cloud in sight and the sun reflected off the bluish greenish water. The air smelt of smoke and fresh trees. Early in the morning when the campground is quiet you can even hear the waterfall. Holland Lake is a very busy lake with boaters, tubers, water skiers, ect. Since that day was so nice there were a bunch of boats on the lake the waves were huge. Kinsey, Lauren, Alex and I were all pretty close in age but Alex and Lauren were taller so they get the outside of the tube. When we all finished breakfast I changed into my swimming suit speedy fast and rode my bike as fast as I could to my cousins camper, Alex. I had to wait what felt like 5 hours for her to change. Once she was done we waited for Kinsey and Lauren at ¨The Beach¨. Alex and I killed time by talking about how much fun we were going to have…

As soon as we got there My Uncle Shaun and I were put on tent duty. We didn’t have a camper, or a houseboat, so the most reasonable option was to bring tents! This side of my family doesn’t go camping much, so I found it very interesting that we were “tenting.” Mostly my uncle set up the tents, since I was about eleven and didn’t like to work. I mean, I still don't, who does? Anyways, because I had my swimming suit on, I found it very appealing to go for a swim. So I stepped in and I did not expect what I got! The water was warm, a whopping 80 degrees fahrenheit! I had never been in water so warm until I came here. Normally we go to lakes/reservoirs it’s usually Island Park, Jensen’s Grove, or American…

We put on footies still wet from tide pooling, and life jackets, so if the kayak lips over then we won't drown. Then we got our oars. We were partnered up boy, girl. Dan taught us how to maneuver the kayak,a few peoples’ oars bumped into each other. Then my partner and I grabbed a green kayak, and bided until everyone else was in the water. Then, Dan schlepped our kayak to the shore, and told us to get in.I was shaking from all of the excitement. My partner got into the front, I went into the back. Then the waves started to get bigger and bigger and bigger , then finally, Dan pushed our kayak into the waves and we were off!! I was so excited I almost forgot to…

George came by my house, we loaded all my belonging inside his car and my surfboard on the roof of his, I think, 1963 VW bug with an engine made to go really fast. And that began a journey that a few days later landed us in California for our first surf adventure. There would be many more of those that followed that involved other friends. That driving pull…

I knew I wouldn’t make it to the top of the murky, warm and brown waters. I could feel the oxygen being released quickly from my lungs and bubbles swiftly skimming my skin as I slowly reached the bottom of the lake. I heard the faint cries for help and loud splashing as my sight becomes blurred. I felt someone’s hands grab mine and pull me onto the grainy dusty dirt. My vision comes back and I feel everyone’s eyes on me. They all immediately start laughing at me as I stood up and brushed the dirt off of me, feeling something tightly clutch my body.…

Almost within minutes it seemed he had arrived at Mission Beach. The sun was pretty much sky high on this early September day. He stood for a while gazing in the direction of the sand and sea. His hands were calmly by his sides. Noticing that the sun was too bright for his eyes, he slowly, with coolness about him, slid his sunglasses down from atop his head to the level of his eyes. The sunglasses were black and of a surfer brand style. Johnny could now see the details of what was happening upon the beach without squinting his eyes and forehead. This was a beach, he noticed, with diverse persons in attendance. Specifically he noticed an elderly couple walking along the sidewalk of the beach hand-in-hand, and both their hair colors were as white as…

I realized, reading over my previous blog posts that I never really mentioned what happened out there, and why my swimming came to an end. And perhaps sharing that tale can prove a little cautionary for those heading out for the ride. I had finished a local surf show and competition the night before, waves were great, some fourteen footers were making their appearance known, and I did relatively well, though wasn’t totally on my game that day. The next morning, I decided to get some extra practice in, and knew the waves would still be decent form the previous day.…

I leap onto the hot, dry sand as it screeches under my burning feet, bolting with speed down to the water, so eager. The surfboard feeling heavy under my arm after trekking from home in the scorching summer’s heat. I dive in and it actually feels like heaven, exhilarating, yet I have never felt so alive. I paddle over a clean 3 foot wave rolling in and over towards my anxiously waiting mates, anticipating the next sets to come through. I finally get out the back of the waves and sit up on my board next to an old veteran male surfer, with a long grey beard, tanned and wrinkled skin like leather. We started chatting about our love of surfing. Our conversation went from how long he has been out for to his greatest surfing experience and just how much it all means to him. This is what it’s all about to me, not only the physical pleasures, but the fact that you belong to and relate to surfing culture. No matter who it is, your gender or age, surfing becomes a common bond.…

Once we got deeper into the ocean the waves started pounding me. Unfortunately for me, my dad and siblings weren’t just going to stop there for me. I was pretty sure there was something down there. The broken shells did nothing to remedy that fear. After many waves, and stopping for me to glance at the bottom of the ocean we reached the place where we could catch a wave. When we saw an enormous wave my dad…

The highlight of the trip was parasailing. Halee, Hannah, Hannah, Jason, Jason’s friend, and I were all loaded onto a banana boat, a bright yellow blown up raft that was in the shape of a banana. A man on a jet ski pulled us to a larger boat farther out in the ocean. The larger boat was white, with the word PARASAIL painted on the side in big, bold letters. I would guess it was probably 10 or 15 feet long. We were transferred from the banana boat to the larger boat and sat on the benches lining the clean, white walls. Three men chose Halee, Hannah M, and me to go first. We were loaded up in a harness like the ones you use when ziplining, and hooked to a big red, parasail that has Coca-Cola written in big, white letters on the side. As we were preparing to leave I could hear my heart pounding in my chest. The boat accelerated forward and my feet left the rough surface of the back of the boat. Beside me, I could hear my little sister squealing with…

It wasn’t until I was playing in the pool one summer’s day with my older brother and his friends that my perspective changed. While roughhousing and splashing about in the water, my brother put me in a chokehold and held me under the water for what felt like hours, as I tried desperately to break free. I began to lose my senses: their laughter already muffled by the water got quieter and the bright, summer sunlight began to dim. Just before I passed out, my brother released his grip. My panic persisted, despite the absence of immediate danger and replacement of water with oxygen in my lungs. Crying then, I managed to drag myself from the pool and find a dry towel. I didn’t get back in the pool that day. It wasn’t a drastic change that followed, but the next time the boys asked me to join a game of football, I was hesitant to agree. It was more of an awareness of my physical limitations as the boys continued to grow and I reached a…

When we were in Florida we decided to go to Panama City, Beach. On the way there we drove past the snow like sand. When we got there the cotton ball like clouds in the bright and sunny sky, the aquamarine sea and the golden brown sand is all I saw when I walked onto the beach of Panama City. It was so beautiful. Maria, my sister Deanna, my brother Michael, my mom, and I went to set our stuff up on the beach. We took our shoes off and let the burning hot sand warm our feet. We buried Michael up to his head in the golden brown sand. Many people were swimming and surfing, we went swimming for a bit. The water was freezing cold like icicles, but felt really good at the same time. The bottom of the ocean you could feel sand crabs, and all of the shells both broken and not broken. We were having so much fun, but then it started to rain cats and dogs. So we got out of the water and grabbed our…
