The Giver By Lois Lowry
In Lois Lowry’s book, The Giver, a picture is painted of a perfect utopia. In this place we soon figure out that there is no such thing as differences. In this Utopia, there is no emotion, no color, no war, no poverty and no hunger. But, not everything is as perfect as it seems. One of the events that affected me most deeply was finding out that this Utopia was really a Dystopia. In the beginning of the book, we meet a young boy named Jonas who is about to undergo the ceremony of twelves. During the ceremony we learn that Jonas is going to have one of the most important jobs in The Community and that he is going to be The Receiver of memories. We learn that Jonas’ dad is a Nurturer and he brings home a failure to thrive baby named Gabe.

Since Jonas can ask any questions to The Giver he asks him about release. The Giver informs Jonas that he can watch his father release a baby on video since Jonas is allowed to ask for anything. The video shows Jonas’ father talking to the baby in a soothing voice and then giving the baby a shot in the forehead. When Jonas sees the emotionless baby, he realizes that release means death. Jonas felt disquieted. The Giver and Jonas then realize that The Community wasn’t a Utopia and it was a Dystopia afterall. They formed a plan of how to get The Community out of sameness. The Giver was to stay behind while Jonas escaped to Elsewhere so the people in The Community would have to bare the memories. Jonas was forced to leave right away instead of in two weeks like they had planned. His father informed him that Gabe would be released the next morning. Jonas could not let that happen so he took Gabe with him, while showing great integrity. He stole food and his father's bike and took Gabe with him. Jonas would transmit memories to Gabe of exhaustion so he could sleep through the days. The memories of cold would protect them at night so they couldn’t be detected on the planes devices. Just when Jonas and Gabe have reached starvation and feeling relinquished the memory of sunshine helps them get up a snowy
