As he is meeting with the Giver he is also taking care of Gabriel who is a problem newchild. In the novel when someone is released out of the community it is basically equivalent to death. So when Jonas finds out that Gabriel is going to be released he becomes furious and wants to put an end into things like this. In Chapter ten the Giver says “There’s much more. There’s all that goes beyond - all that is Elsewhere - and all that goes back, and back, and back. I received all of those, when I was selected. And here in this room, all alone, I re-experience them again and again. It is how wisdom come. And how we shape our future.(Pg.130)” The Giver acknowledges that there is something wrong with the way the community functions. It’s always been this way(Pg.139).” He says this because he disagrees about what the communities Nurturers are doing the newborns. The Giver goes on to say that his own daughter had become a Receiver of Memory but she decided to be released on her part because she could not accept the memories that she was receiving. So the Giver and Jonas devised a plan to get Gabriel out of the community before he would be released. Jonas leaves with Gabriel and with supplies to elsewhere in order to evade the release of Gabriel.
At this point search planes are looking for Jonas so Jonas tries to keep himself and Gabriel hidden. It begins to snow later in their journey, throughout the novel Jonas has been transmitting memories to Gabriel in order to keep him in a good mood and to motivate him. Jonas is at the top of a hill when he sees a sled that he saw in one of his memories. He gets on the sled with Gabriel and they slide down the hill. There Jonas sees a house in the snow and he hopes to find help
