Grit is tenacity. Grit is resilience. It is the one thing that anyone can display, regardless of their birth, attributes, weaknesses, strengths, or culture, because it is a measure of one’s effort. Because of this, it is extremely difficult to display my own grit on an application or transcript alone. Here’s an example: because of that one pesky A- during the first semester of freshman year in Honors Integrated Physical Science, I currently have a 3.991666 grade point average. If one saw that on a transcript, they might look at it without

In Crede’s main point he criticizes recent studies on regarding GRIT and success. Crede states that Duckworth is responding to grit incorrectly because he is making it a bigger issue than it is. He is very dramatic on this topic. Grit is parallel to conscientiousness, according to psychologists who say it is not changeable, whereas Duckworth argues that grit is changeable versus Credes view who agrees with psychologists. Plus crede feels that a lot of the information is regurgitated or overused; for example, he states, "And it doesn't tell us anything that we don't already know." It may seem like Crede has the world against him but there are new studies that show similar beliefs as she. As in a new study that will be issued in the “Journal of Personality and Social Psychology”. Is evidence…

Nelson Mandela once said: “An education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” This quote profoundly reflected the attitude displayed by myself in my college selection search. I eventually narrowed my selection down to Indiana University Bloomington and Wabash College as a result of these two stellar college’s history of high scholastic achievement. While these two academic institutions share some characteristics in common, their differences in composition, academic programs, price, and credit transfer services were enough for me to chose one over the other.…

Angel B. Pérez in the article, “Want to Get Into College? Learn to Fail” argues that perfection doesn't exist therefore students who apply for colleges should respond with the truth of who they are. Pérez supports his suggestion by describing what colleges actually expect in college application. In fact admission officers are digging deeper to find out who the students really are on the outside of school rather than the student with trophies, medals and good grades. The authors purpose is to persuade that perfection isn’t needed. On the other hand the truth is needed so that high school graduates applying for colleges don’t make an error that can shape their life forever. The author writes in formal tone for students who who look forward to attending the institute. Therefore high school graduates who want to obtain an education after secondary school should think twice before they respond. Admission officers…

According to Duckworth: “It may be obvious that effort and stamina are required to accomplish anything worthwhile in life. Less gritty students are, in contrast, more easily discouraged, prone to take “naps” midcourse, and frequently led off track by new passion” (True Grit by Angela Lee Duckworth and Lauren Eskreis-Winkler, 18). In the other words, an effort and stamina are required for college students to reach their long-term goals. Students who have a lower level of grit more easily discouraged and a lack of strong grit might make these college students give up and leads off track by new passion. For instance, I interact with highly ambitious students in this college. I have changed to become more ambitious than I was before. I now see failure as an opportunity to improve, to do better. And as I have noticed, when this semester started in my English writing class were much more students, but after the first assignment to write essay some of them dropped this class. They haven’t perseverance and endurance, they showed their lack of grit. Lack of grit limits students get long-term goals and to accomplish anything worthwhile in…

There are several reasons that I did not perform well for the duration of my high school career. I am hoping that the Ryerson Admissions will consider the following reasons when evaluating my application to the Creative Industries program September 2016. I suffered mental stress regarding issues with my father, which affected my school attendance drastically; ultimately, this led me to suffer from depression. I was involved in high level competitive sports which I used as my outlet for happiness, unfortunately also contributed to my absences. Since leaving high school and taking the time to deal with my setbacks I have come back strong and more determined than ever. My marks now reflect my efforts in class and I…

I had the opportunity to interview Carmen, parent of a sophomore student at a local magnet school, Skyline. She recalls the process being nerve racking at first because she felt like there was not much she could do, but just encourage her daughter. The student had to have a certain grade point average, passed all the standardized test, write an essay and have an interview at the school. When her daughter was in middle school, she was a bit above average, she passed all her tests and was even commended on one or two, and she was very outspoken; therefore she was confident her daughter would “knock it out of the park”. She personally helped her daughter get ready for the interview and met with an English teacher to prepare her to write the essay. When she found out her daughter was accepted to Skyline she was very proud that all her daughter’s hard work had payed off.…
