Leaving the rural, war-torn area my family called home, forcibly, and moving to Iran’s capitol city, Tehran, shaped deep cultural understanding. As a young, Kurdish immigrant, I adapted to big city life. Notwithstanding, moving from Iran to Indianapolis, IN; offered vastly different cultural and language experiences. However, this adversity has but brought new and exciting opportunities.
As an immigrant to the United States and as a person of color who had to help support my family throughout my undergraduate education, I am well aware of the challenges that students must navigate to be successful. To support others in their quest for academic excellence, I worked four semesters as a tutor for underrepresented students. In that capacity, I assisted by participating in programmatic events and sharing my own journey to provide a positive voice that things can and do get better. One should confess that the simple presence of people with diverse back grounds is not the solution; it is the active involvement and desire to teach and help others that makes them an important treasure to the
