As well as the fact that some schools have done research that when they start later, teens are able to perform better. Most kids wake up around 6-7 and that leaves very little time for adjustments to school work because they feel tired and groggy, leaving them to not do as much as they’re able to do.
Research shows that 50-80% of students suffer from some form of sleep deprivation (Why School Days Need To Start Later). By pushing back the starting time to at least 9, as suggested in studies, students mental health and overall physical health could begin to improve. As a lack of sleep can lead to such issues such as depression, anxiety, and obesity.
It does not make it seem fair in order to make these poor students who often have lives and personal experiences of their own to be wake up early and be forced to work half awake. It is kind of saddening when the entire class is tired and unwilling to work because of a multitude of reasons out of the student’s control. Many people assume that teens just stay up too late on social media, but some teens have clubs they attend to or sports, then go to jobs that where they work for hours then come home, complete homework all around 1-2 AM. Doing this day after day puts stress on students. Is it any wonder then why students find themselves having breakdowns trying to manage their school life?
