Purpose and Audience
1. In paragraph one, Hasselstrom clearly states that she is “peace-loving” and due to past events she carries a pistol to be safe. She also wants to give valuable reasons on why people should carry pistols.
2. Paragraph five serves to give an example of a person who got raped after calling for help on her CB radio. The author is trying to point out that the person got raped because she did not have a weapon for self defense. It supports her main idea so therefore I don’t consider this paragraph unnecessary.
3. Yes, the author is aiming women in particular. In all the examples, she directly explains how women are harassed by men. Therefore,

“A Peaceful Woman Explains Why She Carries a Gun” is an excerpt from Linda M. Hasselstrom’s essay Land Circle that details why and for what purpose she purchases a handgun and concealed carry permit. In the essay, Mrs. Hasselstrom recounts several instances where men disrespected and purposefully intimidated her in violent ways that truly scared her. Originally, Mrs. Hasselstrom took Kung Fu, but soon realized that if she was attacked by an average male, he could easily over power her just due to his superior size. Now armed with a gun at all times, Mrs. Hasselstrom’s interaction with belligerent man changed drastically. Men still acted disorderly and disregarded her polite requests to cease, but when she displayed her gun the whole overtone…

In the article “Why One Women Carries a Pistol” by Linda M. Hasselstrom, Hasselstrom is a woman on a mission. She strongly believes women should carry pistols to defend themselves from being attacked or raped. Hasselstrom learned that any female around the age of twelve can expect to be criminally assaulted, and women around the age of thirty have a fifty-fifty chance of being raped, robbed or attacked. The percentage in guns purchased by women went up and they even modified the weapons to be lighter and smaller so women can be more comfortable using them. I believe women are getting tired of being abused and treated like they are powerless against men. Hasselstrom believes a gun can change man’s perception on women being weak and powerless. I would have to agree with her, a gun is a powerful tool to have.…

The author's purpose in writing this is to show the reasons why we should be able to own guns without any restrictions. He does this by using logos and stating reasons why he, himself, owns guns. “I own a gun to protect my family” is one of the reason he uses to justify the ownership of a firearm (pg.204). This argument is viewed as helpful, because most gun owners buy guns for protection. He also states “society has men as protectors of the innocent.”(pg.204) Guns add to this perception society has. This argument can go both ways. The police are viewed as protectors or the enemy based on the area and race. It’s also stated that guns are helpful during bad…

He has point that all the school officials are the first responders to the bad situation but they cannot do anything without a gun. Some school districts are allowing the teachers to carry a concealed weapon, where the police station is not close enough for them to respond quickly enough. Schools are just trying to just handle a bad situation until the help arrive. Some of the schools staff said that they would rather attack the intruder rather then let the situation get worse. They forget that if they were to die by the intruders gun, the rest of the people they were suppose to protect are now vulnerable. If a bad situation were to raise the, school staff that is present would be able to control the situation with a gun. The author is trying to support that the teachers should be armed, while he is giving reason why they should not be, like he said that practicing shooting is important, but the school staff might hurt the students they are trying to protect. The schools that are located within one mile of a police station are defenseless for five minutes until the police arrive. The teachers that would be selected to carry a concealed weapon would also put on major responsibilities on…

333). What I understood, he was saying that the police have belief and understanding about using the weapons against people. From my own perspective, I think the author was right because the police do have their own beliefs of using weapons against people. Though, the police have been recklessly shooting the citizen when they are afraid. I think they shouldn’t shoot recklessly because what if the suspect was just holding an object, not a weapon or suddenly turn toward to the…

I disagree with Hasselstrom theory that a gun is the only method to protect yourself against sexual assault. Aside from the fact that she contradicts "peaceful" philosophy, she only tried non-violent methods when she was trying to protect herself used "spray cans of deodorant" to keep her safe and she never encountered a situation that negating that contradicted that it worked.…

Statistics show that there are, by far, more people defending themselves with gun use than there are people committing crimes with the use of guns. Per 100,000 people only 10.22 of them have committed a crimes where a gun was involved. (Lott 12) in the United States there are 80,000 to 82,000 defensive uses of guns during assaults, robberies and household burglaries. Out of the 1,000,000 times guns are used for defensive reasons in the world 400,000 of theses cases have saved lives or prevented lives from being taken. (Lott 2) The use of guns by law-abiding citizens may create a positive externality for others. Therefore,…
