Chris McCandless: The Naïve Adventurer Chris McCandless was a very educated man. He was a law school graduate and was also very adventurous. He thought he was invincible and that nothing could touch him and that was one of the main reasons why he had went off into the wilderness. He had a rebellious spirit because of the events that had occurred in his child hood and that had an influence of his behavior. He was born on February 12, 1968 in El Segundo, California to his parents Walt and Wilhelmina. When someone in the story asked him about his family, McCandless replied “I don’t have a family anymore” (Krakauer). I know that he could never really forgive his father for what he did but I don’t think any sane human being can just abandon their family and not let them know where they are at. I found that very selfish on McCandless part. When McCandless grew older and older he became more adventurous. Immediately after he graduated he went on a solo trip during summer vacation which lasted about two months. When teenagers start getting to the age of 17 or 18 they think they are invincible and try out new experiences. I can relate to McCandless because lately I have been doing things I never would think of doing. They both were very smart throughout high school and college. They both maintained an A average grade in those years. They both also excelled in the sports that they were involved in. Rosellini believed that “humans had developed into progressively inferior beings” (Krakauer 74). So he began an experiment where he lived in a hut, ate berries and seaweed, and hunted with spears and snares. He covered this experiment for about 30 years and came to the conclusion that humans could not live off of the land like our ancestors did thousands of years ago. McCandless was different from the normal person because a lot of people day dream about escaping away from our society and going to the wilderness but very few actually go through with it. He was also different from the normal person because he knew he was going to into the wilderness unprepared and he did not care about what the outcome was going to be because of it. As he told Ronald Franz,“I’m living like this by choice” (52). He knew what he was doing. A normal person with any slight common sense would go to the wilderness prepared at least with proper gear and
