Moreover, I have several ideas to help the team grow more for both Speech and Debate.
First, I would advocate for the Kent team to establish an official youtube channel strictly for instructional and informational purposes. By this I mean that each event could have videos displaying recruitment material and samplings of what the events do. This portion could be to entice parents and new students. Then, there could be videos produced that show skill building techniques and perhaps digital practice methods so that even if you can’t acquire a coveted practice time slot or if you miss a debate practice, there are ways to fully take advantage of the prowess of the veteran members of the team. Next, I would initiate thursday meetings so that, at least for the debate side, assignments and lesson plans could be confirmed and delivered in accordance with the debate class so that both after school and in class students are caught up and on roughly the same page. For speech, this time could be used for speech only captain meetings to discuss the team dinner plans, assembly performance ideas or any other pressing matters that merit their
attention.
Additionally, I think that one way to benefit the team would be to have all novices and scholars alike spend at least a fraction of their practice time to help teach 7th and 8th graders about CX or LD well before these middle schoolers have to make a choice between them so that the middle schools understand what path they would like to take. Also, having pupils teach the material can ensure that they actually know it. Teaching material is one of the best ways to practice it and to confirm knowledge of a subject. Finally, there is always the option to open up an underground gambling ring with rigged rounds to earn the cover cost for national tournaments. This tactic, albeit not exactly legal, could yield large dividends for the team. (This is sarcasm, I do not endorse betting on speech or debate rounds). In the end, I would be flattered if any of the aforementioned ideas are considered for use regardless of my appointment status because I believe that they can genuinely help the team grow, make practices more efficient and more fun. My time constraints are also not excessively prohibitive, I can attend Tuesday and Thursday practices until 5:30 or 6:00 and I plan to compete as much as possible next year. This includes state quals, nat quals, state if possible and I will help to judge early in the year in the novice tournaments. If any constraints do present themselves, I can promise that I will inform the appropriate people ahead of time as well as try to either work around the constraint or make up for the lost opportunity in an equal manner. Thank you very much for reviewing my application and considering me for captainship, I realize the limit of spaces available for this position and I promise that I will strive to better this whole team no matter what. I very much appreciate that whomever is reading this took the time and the energy to evaluate me for this esteemed duty.
