In recent years there has been a substantial amount of gun violence, especially toward children and college campuses. One main issue I have with our government that impacts me as an individual and student is gun legislation laws. There have been too frequent amounts of mass shootings in the last two years in populated areas such as movie theatres, shopping malls, and education institutions, which should be addressed to those in power. People seem to get guns fairly easy whereas requirements to obtain a driver’s license or adopt a pet requires a much more difficult process. Which comes to the argument that these shooters are psychopathic and deranged. Whenever mentally ill patients come to the equation all falls silent. We can’t keep using mental health as a scapegoat. Mentally ill is such a broad term; one would identify OCD as a mental illness yet not every single OCD patient is going to be perpetuator of gun violence. What we need to look close at is the US Constitution’s second amendment it says, “ A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed”. The amendment assures the right to “bear arms” but this is when there were citizens who formed militias in order to protect their communities. Mind you we are living in the 21st century we the citizens shouldn’t have to protect or defend our families if there are police and police stations to do those services for our community. If an individual wants to have a firearm in their household to protect from community members they should be enlisted to go through extensive training of how to shoot, when it is appropriate to shoot and other necessary reforms.
